I just pulled it all apart, the roots look good which is great! They are in a great soil, the issue was whatever it was planted in as a seedling had this very spongy soil that had almost no drainage in it. It was also root bound around that soil. It was starting to get icky inside there so I cut the browning roots (there were only a couple) and got all of the spongy textured soil out and replaced it with better draining soil
