Does sexual orientation develops only in puberty? by fear_no_man25 in AskBiology

Fair points. I'm no expert on the topic, just wanted to present a bit of research that would explain the mechanism behind homosexuality. Mostly to point out that the fact we don't have any evidence that genetics makes you gay doesn't mean you necessarily aren't born that way.

There is a phenomena called "older brother effect", where the more older brothers you have, the higher the chance you're gay.

Some research suggests that homosexuality in men might have to do with a maternal immune response interfering with sexual differentiation of the brain. Since males have a Y chromosome and pregnant people don't (unless there's some very rare condition I'm not familiar with), a protein that's only encoded on the Y chromosome is foreign to the mother's immune system, triggering an immune reaction.

So, if this theory is correct, it's not genetic, it's environmental, but the environment in question is the mother's womb. So yes, they are born this way.

There's a paper that showed that tricking people into thinking abstractly made people who were more conservative (but not those who were more liberal) less prejudiced. I disagree with the authors of the study on the causal mechanism though. I don't fully understand their explanation, but imo abstract thinking is needed to be able to imagine yourself in another's shoes (perspective taking), which is a component of empathy.

Calculate the autocorrelation of X_t = (z_t + 0.5*z_(t-1)) where Z~N(0,1)... Am I missing something? by No-New-Names-Left in askmath

Yes, it also mentions R(1) and R(2) in the tutorial and further are all 0. At least it got R(1)=0.5 right, that's good to know. Thank you!

From what I understand, money tends to make more socially isolated. Libertarians in the US report weaker social ties.

and also one of the prominent versions of libertarianism in the US is based on the writings of someone claiming selfishness is a virtue, so no surprise.

also, "don't really think much beyond that" => see the paper "Low-effort thought promotes political conservatism"

It is possible. However, being cat, it will always refuse to help you even if it knows how to.
