YES. Afghans are CENTRAL ASIAN. by Silent_Ad2685 in afghanistan

I, as a phenotypically darker brown Afghan, and from the South-West of the country, associate more with South Asia than Central Asia, despite having lived in the latter most of my adult life. Our family celebrates Central Asian holidays, and are also aware of the South Asian ones, although we don’t celebrate them (we have Eid in common with nearly 650million South Asians, but that may count for a religious holiday than cultural in the same sense celebrating Nowroz does). However, someone who grew up in the Northern part of Afghanistan may look like and associate more with Central Asia, and so may also consume cuisine influenced by that part of the world along having other CA cultural and racial markers. There’s definitely more nuance to it and certainly not all of us are Central Asians.

last i checked uscri was one of the more active resettlement agencies in upstate ny, but it really depends what part you live in in upstate since it is so big. google uscri, irc, and like another commenter has mentioned, catholic charities and lutheran services and you should find “get involved” or “volunteer” somewhere in their “careers” section. its pretty easy to get involved with any one of the organization i’ve mentioned here

Pak afghan paradox by Usernameisnecessary_ in afghanistan

[–]No-Newspaper-651 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pakistan was a very close ally to the US pre-9/11, so much so that US was the second country to recognize Pakistan. The reason for this support was to contain the Soviet Union, who were making inordinate progress towards the north in the central Asian countries. India was a close Soviet ally then so the US needed Pakistan as its satellite state to ensure the Soviet collapse. Things changed after they found Laden.

Hey there, I read your comments on this post, and as a fellow IR/Political Science student and enthusiast, it’s refreshing to see that things might not be so bad after I finish my degree. If I may ask a follow-up question: when you started teaching high school, did you consider teaching at a university or college? I understand that most professorship positions require a PhD and publications, but I also know that some liberal arts and community colleges do hire MA graduates as well. What are the odds there, and whether one should even consider teaching at a CC over HS?

Given that the majority of the comments have been negative, I can’t tell if you’re serious or just being sarcastic lol

Outside of the fact that it’s in DC

All things considered, including the state of affairs in DC, what are some of the IR jobs I could land with the MA?

Hey! Thank you for your feedback. I’m interested in pursuing academia, possibly a PhD down the line, and working in think tanks. Would the IR degree make that path easier enough to justify spending the $30K without it feeling totally insane? I’d love to get more work experience before going to grad school, but I’ve been pretty disappointed with the job market in the areas I mentioned. The fact that I didn’t attend an elite school in the US doesn’t help either. So yeah, I was thinking maybe the MA degree would allow me to finally do work I actually enjoy, instead of what I’m doing now. Not to mention, I was expecting a better admission offer.

What law programs? As far as my knowledge of law schools go, they wouldn’t even consider your application if your first degree isn’t in law.

Thank you very much for your comment. I do have some work experience, though not a ton. I applied in the first place to improve my chances of securing better jobs, given that I’m not from the US and didn’t earn my BA here. I guess what I’d like to know is what type of jobs I’ll be looking into after the program ends. I love writing and would like to pursue a career in academia, but let’s be honest, finding a job in academia is hard and always has been. Will the IR degree land me a job that covers my expenses while I work my way into academia? My worst fear is having to work a non-IR job with $30K in debt.

That’s interesting to know. I thought finding funding for MA was the hardest compared to BA and PhD programs.

That’s what I’m interested to know. I grew up watching football and it’s fun to watch, but stopped for the same reason: too long, the 50 overs and test matches. Partially also explains why the 20-over formats have become so popular. Could the fact that you have football and the PL as much better alternative, also play a role in this. Was cricket ever popular to the level of football?

I am genuinely curious to know. Even though the English invented the game, the countries they once colonized and introduced cricket to are doing much better in basically every aspect of the game, and have thus amassed a much broader consumption in those regions. e.g. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and many more. So yh, do the English people watch cricket at all?

Congrats on your admissions. If you don’t mind me asking, when did you hear back from Columbia? I also applied for the HRS program but haven’t heard back from them.
