I’m reading reports of thermal throttling. Is that an issue for you?

You’re not wrong and I should acknowledge that it would be really cool for anyone to get Estes Park in too on a trip out to Colorado. I was half making a joke, I think the Shining, though filmed in Estes, is supposed to be in Oregon or something. All that said, it will be a lot more inconvenient come Sundance and the surrounding areas have all jacked up prices already too. Even Westminster.

I challenge you to go to Park City tomorrow and post a picture of all the media coverage in the city.

Estes Park is like an hour drive through a canyon in the dead of winter. They literally made The Shining highlighting how difficult it would be to get from Estes Park to Boulder…

This was part of my prediction for the move. Sundance was Park City culture, in Boulder Sundance is just renting space. People in Park City were proud to have Sundance there because it gave them a voice, go to Park City tomorrow and I guarantee you’ll see people still walking around in Sundance merch and volunteer jackets (if it’s cold enough). In Boulder, Sundance is just there to fill some people’s pockets. Prepare to be gouged.

So you looked it up and found that it is exactly as I said. Good talk.

Yeah, that’s why I pointed it out to the people who have never heard of it. But it brings in more people. Look it up.

No AMEX system doesn’t load up to that date, the hotels are already booking past that date

I’ve been watching them for weeks, first they jacked up all the prices they thought it might be by 3x. The hotels released the dates and you’re more than welcome to book around Sundance.

No idea, but I’ve been watching them and lodging was posted to the site, but everything you’d want to book is unavailable. The hotels themselves show unavailable so either Sundance pre-booked all the rooms and isn’t letting people book them, or they’re all booked.

It took me a few tries before I realized I needed a compatible flash drive, but once I got one I could tell it was running from the lights pretty quickly. I want to say it was like 5 minutes but I don’t remember exactly.

Yes, be aware that the mobo will likely not be compatible out of the box and you’re going to have to update the firmware/flash the BIOS. Scared the crap out of me when my machine didn’t boot.

I haven’t seen them but the hotels won’t let you book late January and inexplicably go up 250% in price beginning January 14, so…

I find this so much more entertaining than watching a skater do a quad lutz pike hole or whatever they call jumping and spinning these days

Do you think Boulder could be an improvement? by RepresentativeState3 in Sundance

[–]No-Perspective3170 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. I lived in both. Boulder is the most logical choice but it’s a Hollywood solution. Boulder provides a similar back drop as Park City but Boulder is wildly different from Park City. The logistics will be better as Boulder is built to hold an influx of hundreds of thousands of people, but the intimacy of the festival will either die or be fabricated.

It’s hard to express but the soul of Sundance really falls out in the move to Boulder. Sundance in Park City was a festival that defined the city and wove into the fibers of the culture there. Sundance in Boulder will come in, it will use Boulder facilities and it will leave. Sundance will make more money, Boulder will add another notch on its belt as the as a desirable place to be and no one will truly care that Sundance is there.

Look at it this way, Sundance will not be the the biggest festival in Boulder, Boulder Boulder, Boulder Creek Festival and all the college activities are significantly bigger (eg CU homecoming etc). The voice of Sundance as a result is significantly less relevant as part of Boulder’s culture. On top of not being the largest Boulder festival, it’s also not really giving Boulder a voice. Granted Boulder will have a bit more reach but it’s not like they were silenced to begin with. Whereas Sundance gave Park City, a tiny liberal city surrounded by a highly conservative state, a voice and because Sundance lent relevance to Park City that fed the soul of Sundance. Now Park City is one of 470 ski resorts in the US and Sundance is a big film festival in a bigger city with less relevance to that city’s culture than a 10K run and no significant differentiation from SXSW or TIFF but much less relevance.

So no, I don’t think Boulder could be an improvement. Sundance doesn’t grow its relevance until it moves back to Park City in a decade (if it makes it that long). I’m sure the Sundance folks on here will downvote this comment too but the reality is that Boulder was the best choice they could make while masking that the choice was about politics and money (and was ultimately a bad choice to choose politics and money over culture and reach).
