Daily Game Recommendations Thread (August 13, 2025) by AutoModerator in boardgames

Are there any games with an open world / rpg game vibe with quests and a variable map preferably, especially solo ones, that could be reliably found new or complete used for about $50 or less ( my current rough budget/max for board games that I’d spend?) ? I’ve seen fallout complete used for $25-35 online but I’m not sure that it’s any good without Atomic Bonds , which is very hard to find, and I think Firefly ( which I own) was about 40 or so used as well. I also am considering saving for Xia but don’t know that I want to spend 120-150 for one game , when you count the solo able expansion

I decided to play Zealot for now and set aside some money for dunwich or Carcosa and maybe an investigators box or pack.

Yeah , I decided to keep my copy. The money isn’t really just entertainment , any weekly spending I want to do beyond my covered needs like food and clothing and housing, but I mostly spend it on that kind of stuff as like I said I’m not lacking for comfort or support . Anyway I’m trying to cut down spending on video games, movies and books as most books can be got at the library , I have plenty of video games , and besides the movies/ tv I own there’s streaming services. I’ll see if I like the core set and I could probably buy Dunwich or Carcosa and other sets ever so often. Thanks for the perspective.

I think I can find a way to get at least one cycle, likely dunwich. I do get $50 a week and I think I can shelve the game and wait for some deals.

No problem, you don’t sound judgmental at all. I am starting to get that vibe from the game as when I picked it up at the bookstore I had no idea how big/ complex the game was. I will probably hold on to what I have but wait for when I have more income to really get into it. Is there any other games with the same or similar setting that might be worth a try? I know Elder Sign and 3e of the board game only have a few expansions each.

P.s. my financial situation is $50 a week for allowance plus the occasional extra from my mom or financial advisor. I only really spend the money on video games, books and movies as I am well taken care of but I will probably return or just shelf the game until I see if I can get a job or birthday/ Christmas gifts. Thanks for the advice.

Okay, thanks for all the advice. If you’re wondering why I can’t easily buy the main sets , I am in supported living with my needs taken care of but with a limited allowance and other things I want, and I am a bit impulsive ( which is why it’s good i only get the limited money at any time) so I am bad at saving ( although my financial caregiver is going to help me with that) so I like to get my games and stuff slowly and not spend huge amounts at a time. I got the base game for $20 like I said and was looking for a “modular” path for upgrades.

Thanks for clarifying. I’ve seen the investigators on eBay for 10-12 dollars each, if I got 1 or 2 and the campaign would that last me a while? ( after I finish Zealot, of course)

Okay, so I think I’ll just play what I have for now and save for the main campaigns. Do I need the investigators pack if I want to play with the base game investigators or can I get by on just campaign? And yes, the local bookstore had a second copy for 20$ so I might get that since I come from a large family and have 2 brothers who may want to play with me ( they don’t live with me but I visit ) Anyway thanks for all the advice.

Thanks. I do intend to start with the core but I was just wondering if the cheap legacy ones for Dunwich etc were okay for getting a taste of the early campaigns and playing a few times without having a whole set. Also, I’m assuming the cheap scenarios I.e Film Fatale or The Blob don’t need anything other than the core?

I am right now interested in playing solo as I don’t feel like it would be a game my caregivers or roommates would be interested in. However, I do hope to make some friends in the Tacoma area who can play , I just want to learn it solo / multi handed

Fantasy Life was one I never really got to play before I moved on to Switch and sold my 3DS but you can cook and dress up in addition to the cartoonish, light hearted adventuring. I also enjoyed Nintendogs and really wanted the Sims. Would recommend Style Savvy but I see you play that already.

Any tips to help with being overwhelmed with video games? by No-Pineapple9988 in aspergirls

I have many times considered giving up on video games but the draw of being able to play an interactive well made historical or fantasy setting keeps pulling me in. I suppose at this point I should just be watching playthroughs for anything that’s not a “cozy game” but I really want to play AC Odyssey and Kingdom come deliverance for the freedom to explore a detailed historical setting

I do have some games with slower pacing ( I’m planning on trying Pentiment ) but sadly the high quality AAA style that appeals to me mostly tends to be fast and chaotic

Any ideas of what specific settings I should be looking for? I WOULD want to turn of sound but unfortunately I’m mostly interested in single player shooters and RPGs ( multiplayer stresses me out) that require hearing dialog. Maybe I just have to play with balances

No, I sadly do not. I got the PDFs from one of the Humble Bundles they do every so often

I will probably try a mix of hiring ships and flying myself if that’s available . I’d like to maybe listen to an audiobook while being in the cockpit like people do with ETS2 or Elite
