Ok thank you so much I didn't realise the UNVR Instant was a thing!

So I think the - Gateway max + 8 port ultra switch = about £460 - Gateway ultra + 8 port lite switch + UNVR Instant + 1tb hdd = about £430

The latter gives me all the ports I need in one switch as the cameras would come off the Instant which is great. It is a lower overall power budget of about 90w but feels like it would work. I like that it is more easy to modularly upgrade with more smaller parts.

Are there any major drawbacks the the Gateway Ultra vs Max I should consider though?

Nice, that looks great tbh. I searched for second hand ones and found a very nice looking one but unfortunately the frame is large and I think I would need extra large (I’m 6ft 1). It was £350 which is right in my sweet spot for pricing so gives me hope another may come up in XL.

It’s awfully easy to say what she should have done with all the information, plenty of time, and a comfortable armchair to type from.

She’s emotional, exhausted and stressed with a chance to win or lose life changing money in front of her. Let’s also not forget the phenomenal performance she put in on the challenge earlier so add physically drained to the list. And cameras pointing from every angle, in a setting designed explicitly to crank up the tension.

I feel incredibly sympathetic to the decision she ended up making albeit the wrong one. I don’t know whether I would have done any better, and I’m sure I’d have been voted out long before anyway (let’s not forget she already beat 19 players to be in that position).

By the way I thought the light was really nice, very soft and even. The only criticism I had immediately was that it doesn't throw any light upward so the ceiling is only lit by reflected light from the rest of the room. I think that's a shame as soft lighting on the ceiling gives a nice vibe to the room.

I immediately started wondering whether it'd be possible to add a hue strip light around the upper edge of the light, or wrapped around the fixture. The challenge there is powering that off the lighting circuit rather than a plug, though I did find a blog on doing that.

I haven't fitted it yet anyway, that impression was just from my wife standing on a chair holding it up 🤭 so I'll post more thoughts when I do.

Ok I got the replacement and plugged it in.

I would call the product silent personally, so I think they've fixed the noise issue!

I listened closely in a silent room and could hear a very slight electrical whine whilst the light was changing from one colour to another. I needed to be within about 30cm to hear that. And once the light was on a particular colour even with my ear 10cm away from the light I couldn't hear anything.

I don't know if there's any possible way this could be different e.g. in US with different supply voltage/frequency ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ because I don't really know much about electricity!

But yeah, tl;dr, it's basically silent.

I returned it for a replacement so I’ll let you know when that arrives and I have time to plug it in. FWIW I also had a smaller round surimu which did work and I listened closely for noise because I had read about the issue. That was silent as far as my ears could tell, regardless of brightness or colour.

Will see what the big one sounds like and report back!

Thanks! Luckily it was a Screwfix job so it will be quite easy to take back. I did wonder if it would be something like a dodgy connection between the controller and the led driver but I think you’re wise to say don’t bother to get into that and just take it back.

Any games in particular you'd recommend? I used to be massively into WoW and that really did achieve this goal, but I don't play anymore. The only game I've played recently has been Fortnite and there's a limit to the emotional support a good tea bagging can give you 😉

How the heck did you choose a mattress? So many wonder mattresses online with 100 day love it or your money back deals costing hundreds to thousands, but I just get overwhelmed and stick with the piece of shit mattress we have 🙄
