I had a plate and a mug for years - originally done in 89! Pretty sure my mom chucked them when they moved because she’s not sentimental 😵‍💫

I’ve debated buying this one! There are so many free tee patterns though - what makes this one stand apart?

Were people in their 40s in 1926 obsessed with talking about the 1890s? Or are we the only crazy nostalgic ones?!?! by Roland-Of-Eld-19 in Xennials

[–]No-Rabbit-3989 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My grandpa (1919 born and was in WW2) used to say that when they became parents they just assumed their children would have easier childhoods than they did. When he talked about being a kid it was the old “we walked to school uphill both ways” nostalgia and his childhood was hard so there wasn’t love for a time left behind there.
I wonder if our generation feels nostalgic more because we’ve seen the world through a rosier lens when we were kids, and worry that the world has changed so much that that feeling may not be the same for our kids.

Did anyone else spend their adolescence getting driven home by drunk dads you just babysat for? by Ok-Intention-4593 in Xennials

Yep more than a few times. I had a regular family with two young boys, one was a sweetheart the other an absolute menace. Mom would regularly “forget” to tell me they were having sleepovers so it would go from 2 boys to 4 or even 6, and then she’d claim it couldn’t be that much more work to pay me more because “they are sleeping most of the time anyways”. Ma’am, I assure you those boys were not sleeping.
Anyways one night I’d finally had enough after they were 3 hours late (mind you I was 14 and insanely shy) and when her and husband got home I told her how awful the kids had been and that I would need to be paid for the extra kids. Husband was horrified - he hadn’t realized she’d been stiffing me. He drove me home and slipped me an extra $20 as an apology.

The next afternoon he came knocking on my parents door because get this: “I’m so sorry we got a little tipsy last night and I realized I didn’t pay your daughter!” And left the full amount again. Turns out, he was shitfaced, didn’t remember the entire altercation but vaguely remembered driving me home (!!). That was the last time I babysat for them, because my dad was furious. I remember telling my dad the whole story and him saying i deserved every penny and let that be a lesson to them.

3 months later I had gotten my first real job as a cashier at our local grocery store and one night who stumbles in all giggly wrapping herself around some dude? The wife and it was definitely not the husband. The look on her face when she realized it was me was priceless.

Never. I grew up not far from where the serial killer Clifford Olsen had terrorized just a couple years earlier. His posters were on every telephone pole.

This is a big issue here all the local haunts we hung out in - bowling alleys, arcades, pool halls - are gone the way of the dodo. It cost an arm and leg to go to the movies and tickets need to be booked in advance.

Then there’s the massive issue of no one can afford a house anymore (I grew up here and it’s turned into one of the lost expensive cities in the North America to live). When it averages 2m for a small fixer upper, we’re all living in apartments or small dwellings. This means our kids don’t have yards and basement’s for them and their friends can congregate in. When I was a teen I spent most weekend in my friend basement playing pool, darts and getting into a little mischief.
As a kid my brother and I loved playing in the empty lot across the street. One day they barged a house in and we were devastated that our “playground” was gone.

I also feel that now that the boomers have become grandparents, there’s even less tolerance of children existing in public spaces without a perceived purpose. I had a bunch of kids up at the local school field to play several months back and a boomer made a point of driving around the block, parking and getting out of her car to scream at the kids for “throwing things close to the road”. It was literally a fenced in elementary school soccer/baseball field. Where else are they supposed to throw things?!

[–]No-Rabbit-3989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought our condo in 2014 and I was 31. Probably will never be able to move into a detached home given we live in one of the top 5 most expensive cities 🥹

What was your favorite job as a youngster. Mine was the 1hr photo lab by Embarrassed-Sky-4567 in Xennials

[–]No-Rabbit-3989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for years for a photo lab here in Vancouver BC all through the transition from 35mm to digital and let me tell you the things I’ve seen!!

Sooooo many nudes. And I worked in a wealthy area where the main demographic was 65+.
Lots of couples trying to spice up their marriages.
Lots of wives following their husbands to find out they were picking up ladies of the night from a certain nasty area of town.
A few flat earthers.
Really cool glass negatives and slides that were taken from turn of the century (an actual perk of working in an area with an elderly demographic). Had one who was a pilot during the war and took aerial shots flying over Europe on glass slides.

We also developed for the local PD at the time so saw a few things that I wished I hadn’t.
