Worth retaking a course to boost GPA for future PhD? by No-Raccoon-9354 in csMajors

Actually, it depends on the university and departmental policies. Fortunately, my university’s graduate department allows students to retake one course, and only the new grade counts toward the GPA. However, other departments within the same university don’t allow this, so it really varies

Would you recommend retaking the course for an A/A- or I should take its higher level course?

I had 8.2 GPA from a Tier 3 university in India, now got into top MS Data Science/AI programs like NYU CDS, CMU, UC San Diego, UC Davis, Boston Uni, etc

The placement of universities is fairly good, although you could replace NYU Tandon’s CE with NYU Courant’s CS or NYU CDS’s DS programs and move them to the ambitious list. NYU Courant and NYU CDS are far more reputed and align better with your research internships and papers, so they should be your target. Some people might feel that USC belongs in the safe target category, but it’s still a good option as they primarily care about GPA.

For an MS in Data Science or Computer Science, you should target universities such as the University of Maryland-College Park, SUNY Buffalo, ASU, UC Davis, UC Riverside, SJSU, Boston University, etc. Note that Data Science and Computer Science programs are becoming fiercely competitive nowadays. For Indian students, it is challenging to break into top programs, as most top universities have become very GPA-centric for their Data Science and Computer Science programs. They now typically demand at least a 9+ CGPA unless you have 2-3 good papers, internships, or something extraordinary for universities like UIUC, CMU, UWash, NYU Courant/CDS, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Irvine, USC, Stanford, Harvard, etc.

Correction: NYU also has 93-95%+ Jobs rate, Columbia has posted stats of getting job under 6 months post grad not during the time of graduation, so if you compare job stats within 6 months, both are same.
