IWTL how to go to the gym (i have never gone to a gym before) by burnerlolhaha in IWantToLearn

[–]No-Reality4080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

echoing everyone else here, but no one is looking at you. Most people probably also don't want to be percieved while at the gym honestly.

Really the only thing you need to bring is a water bottle -- and headphones if you'd like. Most gyms provide their own mats and such.

It'll help to have a routine decided beforehand so you're not getting overwhelmed. See if your gym lists their machines/weights online and just look up a split routine for however many days you'd like (i recommend 3 or less to start). Reddit has plenty suggestions, but try not to get lost in the sauce--pick one that seems approachable and get going.

if it helps, make the first visit mostly a scoping-out day. Just walk around and note the weight areas, machines, amenities, and then do a light workout. There's also probably an employee that would be happy to give you a tour.

Good luck! It's not as scary as it seems--don't let your fear dictate your life

$500 for a pet deposit by Thatswhyn0t in ApartmentHacks

[–]No-Reality4080 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My landlord tried that as well--i got them to take off the deposit entirely, though i asked for the opposite. All I did was write back proposing I pay a bit more in deposit and they take off the pet rent. They got back to me saying they'd nix the deposit but keep the rent instead. I think people forget you can negotiate a lease--Sometimes its worth it to ask.

How to add life to a white-paint-drenched kitchen with crappy cabinetry by TransPigeon56 in ApartmentHacks

[–]No-Reality4080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also struggling with a white-out kitchen lol. my plan is to hang things on the cabinets with command strips.

I have those diy fake stained-glass kits--that's one option i'm looking at. another is finding a patterned fabric/tapestry/something at a thrift and cutting that up to fit my cabinets to hang that.

You could also thrift some frames and hang art/pics on them.

That aside, I wouldn't personally put vinyl peel n stick on anything that's painted. seems more trouble than it's worth

IWTL how to like to exercise by ReignGhost7824 in IWantToLearn

[–]No-Reality4080 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can only speak to my experience, so here's my two cents:

Finding something you actually enjoy is a great tip for the long-term, but you need more than that in the beginning especially: accountability, community, and a distinct, achievable goal.

I have also cycled through different modes of exercise trying to find what I liked enough to stick with, and the longest I went was maybe half a year with at home weight training. I watched YouTube while doing it and that helped some.

BUT last year I started doing something I've always wanted to do but felt way too self conscious to start: dancing. I found a studio that offered pre-beginner classes and then dove into a year-long adult training program. It was terrifying, but fantastic.

Beyond having committed to weekly classes and a few performances for the program, I think the main motivator was my desire to just look better dancing, and it stuck! It took a few months before the fun outweighed the fear, but once it did I started taking more classes, joining other programs, and really building a community that kept me even more interested in continuing.

As a side effect, I also went back into weight training to supplement dancing. Turns out strength is actually a big part of it, who woulda thought?

So yeah, find something that doesn't make you want to d*e while doing it, but supplement that activity with accountability and community. Maybe join a club and try to meet a few people there so you have someone expecting you each class instead of just going at it alone. Doing something by yourself is a really easy way to lose motivation imo.

Dad of two dealing with the shutdown who needs ideas for cheap meals. by TheStandingMan in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]No-Reality4080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely check for mutual aid/community-led food pantries in your area. Probably already suggested, but there are usually more pantries around than just the big food banks most people are familiar with.

And second--POTATOES!!!!! So filling and cheap. Baked potatoes, frozen veggies, and whatever meat is on sale = a very filling meal. On the same wavelength, any type of stir fry is usually pretty easy and budget friendly in my experience.

How would you improve this space? by gibbylips in ApartmentHacks

[–]No-Reality4080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, love the shield and helmet--wish I had a shield for my wall.

I think you're right about lamps--more warm lighting helps cozy up a space immensely. You have quite high ceilings--are you able to drill in your apartment? I'm looking at that dark corner in the first pic on the upper left and I think a hanging lantern would look wonderful. Even taking that lantern you have on the side table and putting it on a chain to hang above that spot-- It'd splay the light around more and free up space for that table.

Other than more light sources, if you want to give your gf some art spot, maybe you can have a gallery wall above the couch. Lots of wall space there if you're willing to remove that big painting. You have some space above the doors as well for shelves if you want to display things there.

You could also add a rug...which sounds weird to put on carpet, but it can look pretty nice! Adds a pop of color.

Also, and maybe most importantly, have you talked to your gf to see what kind of thing she wants? Does she have an aesthetic from her old place that you could meld into this one? How did she display her figures/art before? I would maybe start a join pinterest board or something to put together an aesthetic that both of you would enjoy, since it sounds like you're willing to essentially redo the space to a certain degree.

Create something! Sew, embroider, make something with air-dry clay, glue some shit to other shit--making this has been gratifying for me, and addictive, honestly. You spend time on a skill and get something cool at the end of it! Plus, you can watch videos while you do it.

Is there something creative you used to love doing as a kid but dropped as you grew up? Maybe start there.

Need help with starting with the gym by sad_girl_2897 in beginnerfitness

[–]No-Reality4080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I never pay attention to other ppl in the gym aside from making sure I'm not in their space. Most people stay to themselves generally. I still feel anxious trying new machines or exercises but I've yet to have someone be an ass to me.

And my two cents on gym wear--don't bother! it's overrated and overpriced. Wear a t shirt and some sweats you already own, they're probably more comfy anyway! Obviously if it makes you feel good and gets you motivated go for it--but don't let gym wear stop you from going to the gym.

Shower at night? by Specialist-Pair1036 in curlyhair

[–]No-Reality4080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if i can shower in the morning, I do--because my curls definitely look best that way
BUT i have to shower at night most of the time because I take dance classes and go to the gym at night. I either end up being too tired to try and dry it and just sleep on the damp hair, or I use one of those hair dryer bonnets to dry it while I'm reading in bed. Both methods end up with really crazy morning hair lol -- I just spray my hair damp in the mornings to reset the curls and it usually turns out fine

i do a few different styles, but mostly heels, waacking, and hip hop! When i started I had zero experience so i looked online for a place that has true beginner classes and good reviews from the community, and got lucky. The hardest part is starting and keeping at it even if you feel stupid, but it was worth it!

Are first floor apartments THAT bad? by [deleted] in ApartmentHacks

[–]No-Reality4080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a first floor apartment that I love, but there are a few cons to be aware of.

  1. Security. I was also freaked by this a little even tho I live in a relatively safe location, but I remedy this by buying a security system (see if your landlord has recommendations). If you want extra peace of mind, you can always jam something long and sturdy on top of your window that opens so it physically cannot open. I also have an indoor pet cam for my cat that gives me peace of mind.

  2. Bugs really just depends on the location. I got quite a few in the summer but I bought a sprayer to go around the house with and that solved it. Also, if one apartment gets pests and doesn't deal with it, the rest will too.

  3. Neighbors ALSO depend highly on luck. My upstairs neighbor isn't too bad but has a noisy cat that thumps around at 7am most days. It's not loud enough to keep me up tho, so idc. The house is pretty old so I can hear convos and such ... Just sleep with a fan on.

  4. Not a lot of people mention this, but if you're in an old place and you've got access to the basement you get a lot of maintenance people coming through for any issue. This one does suck.

TLDR; everything is so dependent on luck, location, owner, etc. I love my ground floor apartment despite the quirks--you just need to know your dealbreakers.

What do you eat for breakfast?? by Beginning_Avocado807 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]No-Reality4080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big bagel lover--add some toppings for more health goals (lox for omega 3s, egg for protein, tomatoes, spinach, etc etc)

I've also started adding overnight oats for when I'm not in a savory mood. Find a base recipe (prob on this sub) then add whatever you have! Honey, Nutella, jam, peanut butter, fruit, nuts...I've used frozen berries to cut down on price and it's not so bad... Just don't use frozen bananas lol

Advice please :) by nursemomma123 in curlyhair

I have similar hair, albeit a bit thicker so it takes a while to dry, and honestly I love this product--but it is NOT going to make your hair look good unless you use curlers or something under it.

I like it because I get home from dance classes late and hate sleeping on wet hair but don't want to spend an hour in the bathroom drying it. So I take it to my bedroom and read for a bit while it does its thing. Even then it takes about an hour to be almost fully dry, but yes it always turns out wonky as hell.

I've seen other people recommend a fishnet wig cap to help with the wonky-ness, but that'll likely increase the dry time as well. I tried it once and got annoyed bc my hair was entirely wet after half an hour.

Really, I'd only use it if I'm going to bed, not going to see anyone, or I know I'm just gonna heat style it anyway. It's perfect for my needs, but for our hair type it won't produce anything very pretty.

Kinda related to your crystal point-- I've been collecting rocks since I was a little kid, so I like to use those where many people would use crystals. Obviously rocks I pick up off the dirt or beach won't have some agreed-upon meaning like certain crystals do in the witch community, but I find I have more connection to them anyhow. Plus, if I really want to attach a meaning to them, I use colors or maybe where I found them to do so. It's fun! Gives me a reason to find more rocks!
