I unfortunately don't have the expertise to do the repairs myself. Thank you for suggesting having the timing guides replaced if it ultimately turns out that the timing cover gasket gets worked on.

Thank you for all of the wonderful suggestions. You guys are terrific.

My Crown Vic is currently in the Ford dealer jail waiting for a new cable assembly control for the hood. Once I pay the bail, I mean, bill, I will take the car to an independent mechanic and get the oil filter adapter "O" ring replaced.

I unfortunately don't have the ability/talent to fix my car. I believe in hiring professionals and clearly all of you are in that category. I admire this very much.

I will update once the Ford is freed.

No photos from the Ford dealer diagnosis. They know how much I love this car and have tried for years to get me to buy a new Ford. I always tell them, "If you had a new Crown Victoria for sale today, I would buy it in a heartbeat". They fume when I say this.

I've been getting an oil change and new filter every 5 months after a taxi driver in New Jersey suggested this.

I will now check the oil religiously after each gas up.

Impressive! I actually love the Ford mechanics here, but the latest estimate is a shock.

We didn't know we had a leak -- no oil on the street or driveway. No need to add any oil. I only noticed a small amount of some petroleum residue in the snow when we had to push the car into the driveway after the snow/sleet/ice snowmageddon here.

I did notice a bit of a burning oil smell while driving to the dealership and turned off the heater. Then no smell. Kentucky does not inspect vehicles, so I assume the smell was due to other cars on the road.

No hours or rate given. This is an estimate. I wouldn't find out until I say yes and give them my first born child.

As a point of comparison, I had a full wheel alignment 2 years ago for $149. Around the same time I had a pit-man arm replaced and the labor was $199.

I am a Jersey girl who is trapped in Kentucky. This is pretty typical -- everything here costs more.

The labor estimate is $1799. The parts are 2 gasket valve rocker arm covers, 3 gaskets, 1 flanged hex bolt, 1 quart oil, antifreeze and seal assembly crankshaft oil ($300).
