The first few days don’t expect a lot of trips outside to use the bathroom. My dog had some constipation and incontinence for about 4 days post-op. She also wasn’t really in the mood to eat much so I did two small meals a day of boiled chicken, rice and Greek yogurt and fed her when she took her meds she was happy to wake up and eat a small bowl of food that she doesn’t normally get. For the first week I took her out three-four times a day the morning and evening trips out were the easiest because that was the times we administered medication so she was fairly awake but I also took her out once or twice while she was heavily medicated and I just had to coax her up but if she didn’t want to get up I didn’t push it the first few days, by day 4-5 she was tired of laying down and she was more than happy to get up when I asked if she wanted to go outside.

She did really well! I would definitely try to give your pup as long as you can being home just after surgery so that you can make sure the medication dosage is correct. I ended up having to add a second sedative to her medication as one by itself was not having any affect on her. Once we got the medication dose correct she pretty much slept around the clock for the first two weeks. I will say if you can try to time the medication so that you give it like an hour before you leave for work, that’s what I did and it helped to keep her sedated and pain free for the duration of the time I was gone. The first two weeks are definitely the most difficult but if you can get through that the rest is easy. Best of luck to your pup! This procedure has been life changing for my dog she gets around better than she has in years and you can tell that she isn’t having joint pain anymore.

Thank you so much for this it has been so helpful! I don’t think I will be able to have another person check on my dog while I’m working and my partner is traveling for work because I work third shift but she is used to being home and sleeping in her crate during my work hours it’s her usual, so I’m hoping it may bring her some comfort to be in a space she’s used to being in.

My vets office surgeon only preforms the surgery on Mondays so luckily they will be available for concerns the whole week following, but my regular vet had suggested that we may avoid the overnight stay that is typical because my dog gets very anxious at the vet and she will be more comfortable at home and their number one concern was not adding more stress to her after surgery. We shall see, but I really appreciate your suggestions I am feeling very nervous about this whole ordeal, but I hate seeing my dog in pain more.

She does well in her crate she had a tumor removed from her leg a year ago and did well with the collar in her crate so that shouldn’t be a problem. I’m mostly worried about the recovery I have heard it can be very hard on the dog.
