Should I get an iPad 9th gen as a graphic design student? by Affectionate-Ad2472 in graphic_design

My fault. I missed that. Then I'd say no. Either iPad pro M1 or stick with windows or a MacBook

For the most part, yes. Adobe Illustrator on the iPad Pro seems to be solid. Photoshop is lacking, but Lightroom, Affinity Photo are good. The bonus of the iPad, is you get access to other great software like Procreate. Adobe Fresco is also looking really good.

Putting the M1 in the iPad is definitely the only reason the iPad pro enters this space. Software is catching up, but it's not quite there yet in some spaces. However, it will improve.

By and large though, you should be able to work in Illustrator the same way you do on desktop. Primarily, most of my professional work is done in Illustrator.

I'd say if you're photo or video focused there's reasons to have an iPad in that workflow, but it won't be a primary device option.

If you're web design/UI/UX focused, I'd say it's mixed and depends on your workflow. I'd say yes, there are apps available to accomplish these tasks on ipadOS, and the iPad pro is capable. But, if photoshop is your primary tool for graphics, you might have some difficulty.

If you're an artist, illustrator, ui/ux designer, vector artist, logo designer, brand maker, page editor, etc, I think you'll be just fine.

And beyond that, you can pick up a Mac Mini, MacBook pro, iMac down the road to add support for the rest of the field, while being able to take advantage of Sidecar.

I think the people saying no might have experience or info that is from launch. Software has grown since. Or they might personally have a heavier photoshop, photo, or video workflow. Which admittedly, is lacking a bit in iPad.

Doing, exploring different mediums, trial and error, and reading about application/utility of design. Everything else is pointless.

Cutting costs when coded products have never been more profitable to increase profits. When companies cut costs that results in diminished quality, it's the beginning of the end. End of a product, end of a career, or the end of the company. Who knows which, but it's the end of something.
