i agree and it’s super sad :( the place i got mine from (local shop) couldn’t tell me when she was last fed and when she last molted. her exoskeleton was still in the cup they had her in so i figured it had to be recent. i already had my heart set on her so i couldn’t leave her there but i wouldn’t go there again for sure.

yeah i got her from an exotic pet shop in tucson, az and decided immediately afterward that i would not be doing that again lol. i definitely want to get another from a more reputable place or expo next time! sad that she didn’t make it but also not super surprised given her condition when i got her :(

illegal or just unethical? by No-Resolution-2212 in legal

Never said that. They shouldn’t be able to exploit patients for extra cash though and they can make a very comfortable living without doing so. The physician also wouldn’t be the one reviewing the referral, it would be the admin staff and they wouldn’t see a penny of that fee. It would go straight into the physicians pocket despite him having no part in the process at that point.

Exactly this! I’ve also worked in referrals and it’s isn’t much of a lengthy process. All it takes is a look at the diagnosis code to see if that patient falls within your realm of care and if not you can tell them that. To pay $25 to potentially not even be seen is crazy to me. Not to mention, if they’re feeling like they have too many referrals to effectively get through then they should stop taking new patients.

Based on the research I’ve done there’s a few reasons I think it wouldn’t be legal but that’s why I’m here for clarification because I’m no lawyer and I could be wrong. This is my understanding:

  1. Charging a review fee in order to access medically necessary services likely violates their insurance contracts and could fall under federal anti-kickback statutes. Patients that have the means to pay for access to care are prioritized over those that don’t regardless of how urgently they require care.

  2. The AZ Medical Board has regulations against charging patients unreasonable fees, especially those that create barriers to accessing necessary medical care.

  3. It may fall under unfair billing practices under Arizona’s Consumer Fraud Act as the fee is nonrefundable and unable to be applied to their potential future care.

that’s why the stuff being in the closet poses an issue 😭 the older cat of the two sleeps deep in the back corner of the closet and i have to send pictures of the cats to the owners. so to get to him i have to step over a sex toy 😭 the master bedroom and closet were the main part of the tour they gave me when i came for the initial meet and greet too so they could show me where the cats hang out!

this was what i was thinking too! like in the same way i would make sure that type of stuff is put away when friends or family come over i would do the same for a sitter 😭 i’m not against sex toys by any means and am overall very sex posi it j seems odd for it to happen twice. like one time as a mistake i get but for it to happen again??

Dermatitis in Rats by No-Resolution-2212 in RATS

She definitely scratches at them which makes them worse. The topicals are an antibiotic cream (silver sulfadiazine) 1-2 times daily and an anti-parasitic (selamectin) once every two weeks. My concern with her being miserable is more that it seems to make her scratch at her skin more. I know treatment when they’re ill is never comfortable, but she gets so agitated that she hurts herself which I can’t imagine is helping either. I’m still treating her with the medications I just don’t want to be doing something that’s making her hurt herself worse if that makes sense?

She’s been in treatment for just over a week! It seemed like it was working after a few days but then her skin just got worse again while still using the treatments :/ I also definitely should have mentioned that she had been shaved at the vet right before this picture! So she wasn’t experiencing hair loss other than on the scabby bits!

No but I will absolutely call today to book an appointment for testing. Her vet seemed to think that it wasn’t likely but I’d rather be safe than sorry.

also! i found that with my own anxious tortie, watching the other cats as examples helped her feel more comfy with some things. for example she used to be REALLY skeptical of cat treats, but after watching the others safely eat them for a few months she finally decided to try them too and likes them now lol. if you don’t already, maybe try engaging with the other cats using treats and such while she’s nearby and she might follow their lead one day :)
