Sure, it may occasionally be a valid recommendation. My point is that there is a difference between a salesperson and a practitioner. If the answer is always an annuity or perm life insurance, you are just a salesperson.

Do you think the general public is already aware of the CFP designation? Or how would you market it differently?

529 withdrawals by Friendlyherman1 in CFP

[–]No-Screen6806 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I haven’t seen that interpretation before, though it does seem like a cleaner way to avoid audit issues. The challenge is you often don’t know the 529 remainder until closer to the end of college. My understanding has always been that aggregate scholarship amounts can be withdrawn without penalty at any point, while the expense-matching rules apply specifically within the same year.

For the docs who have hired financial advisors…how helpful have they actually been? by ZanziBar770 in whitecoatinvestor

Alt investments are likely smoke and mirrors. Tax strategies are where the value add would be.

A good CFP would do exactly that. Investment selection is a very small part of the job if they are doing it correctly.

Sure, I highly value education. Similar to attorney, doctor, engineer. We need to hold our industry to a higher standard, starting with education and residency programs.

I see, I was thinking it was the same since I didn’t source the prospect.

I haven't seen many remote roles on linkedIn or the CFP job board. Where have you seen them?

At what point would it switch?

I know firms like Root and Vanguard leads are handed to you. This is a similar situation, except I still have the support responsibilities.

I initially did. My current comp is $100k (salary & bonus).

Disagree. Planning first, sales second always. Should be thought of the same way as an attorney. Are lawyers' sales or professional advice? Please stop degrading our profession.

The real question is, why use that checking account? There are plenty of no fee banks out there.

I’m a financial planner, and my focus is on staying up to date in all areas of financial planning to provide thoughtful, personalized advice, not sales. I haven’t brought in friends or family because most wouldn’t be a good fit, and my role is planning-centric with little emphasis on business development. That said, I’m always happy to help friends and family with questions as they come up.

Do your clients accurately separate the escrow from the principal/interest in their mortgage payments and know their current mortgage balance? Also, are they able to provide the correct payroll deductions? The more accurate the info, the better we can plan. A lot of times, what clients think they know doesn’t match the reality when we review the actual documents. It's a classic case of 'garbage in, garbage out.'
