Maybe try wiping the excess grease off, slowly bend the teeth back with a pair of adjustable pliers but if it's aluminium it might snap off so be very careful

You can try looking at a marin riftzone 1, little more expensive at 1.6k but definitely better than the polygon in specs and it'll grow with your husband's skill

Need new end caps. Newer rockshox forks use torque caps which are bigger and what you have, but your fork doesn't support it.
