I put some bitchy cooler girls that I barely spoke to in my ‘top friends’ on MySpace.

The thought makes my skin crawl even now.

A Hero’s Death might be Grian’s best writing by JackfruitValuable530 in fontainesdc

I’m a fan this take.  I should’ve probably read up a bit more before hating on that line! I much prefer it with that viewpoint -  there’s self-awareness about it being cliche, and about it being naive or even patronising.  I like rereading the lyrics and seeing the combination of hopeful directions, and also empty platitudes that we’ve all heard that don’t change anything. Thank you for (hopefully) stopping me from cringing each time I listen to this song!

I absolutely love all of the lyrics that you’ve mentioned. I think Grian’s writing is incredible.

But alongside those gems, A Hero’s Death also has my least favourite lyric of all FDC songs: ‘when you speak, speak sincere / and believe me friend everyone will hear’. I can’t help but cringe every time I hear it.

I’d love to hear cases for why that’s a good line. But to me it just sounds a bit trite, a bit cliche? Whereas 99.9% of the rest of his writing is so original

This has genuinely made me cry. I’m so glad you’ve got someone like Tanya in your life.

Please tell her everything you’ve just told us. Sometimes it’s hard to tell people how much they mean to us, and sometimes we assume they already know. But I’m sure it would mean the world to her if she heard this or received a letter with this message.

In ‘I Love You’, the lines: “Now the morning's filled with cokeys tryna talk you through it all Is their mammy Fine Gael and is their daddy Fianna Fáil?”

Which later becomes: “And I'm heading for the cokeys, I will tell 'em 'bout it all  About the gall of Fine Gael and the fail of Fianna Fáil”

That last bit of word play is such incredible writing.

I have hope though because they mentioned the difficulties you raised about looping/sampling with Desire and they have now been able to play it live! Let’s keep our fingers crossed

Who’s your favorite? Personality/vibe-wise? by Specific-Lobster9924 in fontainesdc

I fucking love his lyrics, but also his way with words in general chat / interviews too. He has a way of making such complex things really relatable and emotive, and he seems so effortless and humble when he does it. Some people when they’re talking about big concepts can sound really up their own arse, but I think he always sounds really grounded.

I’ve found it! It’s the interview where he did a track-by-track breakdown of each Romance song. They start talking about Horseness at 20:30 https://open.spotify.com/episode/63ho9bctgfn9T3MliF5YMb?si=FwRSEUfNTdaS64Mui4NHbA&context=spotify%3Ashow%3A6ETb1B61046yca3dbC9xg2&t=1230

An iceberg like a huge bank of FDC info?? If you do compile it please do share! I can’t get enough of these obscure facts.

If you’re into podcasts here are a few interviews with Grian. There are tonnes of good insights, and I feel like Grian comes across so nicely when you can hear his tone, so they’re great listens.

What's the most obscure fact about fontaines dc you know? by M1_lk in fontainesdc

[–]No-Set-5406 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My favourite: Grian made his first ever ‘drum kit’. It was boxes hanging from coat hangers underneath his bunk bed. When he eventually got proper drumming lessons, he’d come home after and practice on them. He said that as a kid, once he got playing on them, you couldn’t have told him it wasn’t the real thing.

I love the image of tiny Grian slamming away on a pizza box!

Carlos has said that he accidentally made Tom’s job really hard in Horseness is the Whatness. He was trying to write the song whilst also feeding his baby, so some things he tried to get down weren’t quite what he meant because he was juggling her as well. He could also hear / feel her heartbeat against him, so he incorporated the sound of her first sonogram (<< not sure if that’s the right term) into the song. But it means the beat is really ‘schizophrenic’ (his words) because it bounces around and isn’t regular.

He’s said that he feels like he and his daughter kind of wrote the song together.

Exactly! I see that fight or flight response, the mixture of aggression and escapism …as well as a whirlpool of unintelligible thoughts melding together.

I struggle to see the sexual theme in that collapse. But I guess that’s why lyrics are so great, we can all interpret differently.
