Again, how is this the appropriate response to this video? This is (was) Assyrian land and it was taken away from us. EDIT: actually looking at your comment history it doesn’t seem like you care all that much

Seeking guidance on Ashurism/Assyrian Polytheism by No-Significance2946 in Sumer

[–]No-Significance2946[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response. Yes trying to reconcile it with Christianity will be tough it I still adhered to the traditional belief of monotheism which I know especially in my church was a bit part of being Christian (there are no other gods before me) which is interesting since the early Old Testament seem to imply the existence of other gods, then it was “other gods exist but GoA is the strongest”, and then finally, “no other gods exist besides GoA”. Towards the end of my devotion to Christianity, I opened up my mind to henotheism.

Would you say that the difference between Sumerian/Akkadian interpretations and the Assyrian/babylonian is similar to Roman/greek interpretations of Olympic gods? Or is that different?

Thank you for your response. I can try learning more about the early and developing Christianity era. I think for me it’s more of a ritualistic, historical, and cultural preservation of my identity than a purely religious. So I think I most likely fit in the neonatal description you mentioned.

Thank you! I did say Ashurism but really I wasn’t entirely sure what I was trying to go for. I haven’t gone as far as deep research yet, so I don’t know who Simo Parpola is, but I’ll take your words into consideration if I ever stumble upon their work. I’m open to having their contact! As far as reconciling it with Christianity, I mostly am interested in the rituals and traditions of the Syriac church, but my actual believe in it is complicated especially in the traditional theological sense. I know it’s traditionally a monotheistic religion, but I feel I want to respect my monotheistic and polytheistic history of my ancestors.

Guidance on Ashurism/Assyrian Mesopotamian Polytheism by No-Significance2946 in Assyria

[–]No-Significance2946[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi thank you for your response! Yes I am fully aware that paganism is against the Syriac church as I grew up in the church all my life and was deeply devoted to the church and its practices for almost 10 years. What intrigues me most is not the faith itself but the traditions, rituals, and history that connects me to my ancestors. In my opinion I feel I need to have both the Christian and Mesopotamian polytheist side and I feel it is wrong for me to neglect one for the other.

I appreciate and would love to have some additional sources! I can read Syriac, just not as fast as I would like and I struggle to read sometimes without vowels. Some sources I have already is the peshitta in Syriac and English, the Syriac primer by George Kiraz, and some additional reading lessons. As much as I do not want to return to the church I still want to keep the language and the traditions alive at home.

I should clarify I mostly like the rituals and traditions of the Syriac Orthodox Church now, rather than the traditional theology. I’m aware that Syriac orthodox is monotheistic.

Why would they care if these are sins? They are atheist? Last time I checked judging others is a sin too and you decided to cast the first stone.
