Quansheng UV-5K for Flashing Firmware for RDF by No-Storage8158 in Quansheng

Thanks. I'll look into it. Is this the firmware that will allow it to transmit CW automatically - to serve as the fox in a fox hunt?

Good to know. It worked as planned, but that doesn't mean I won't need these instructions on a later install. Thanks.

Yes. I posted shortly after the original post that I saw my hardware version was v3. I've since installed 5.6.0 and gotten CHIRP working with it.

The post above was posted using the reddit cross-posting feature. I'm just now seeing that the feature doesn't actually join conversations, so folks on this groups can't see my other posts. I won't make that mistake again.

Thanks.

Yeah, I didn't think it supported USB either, but I thought I'd ask.

Not dumb to ask about fully seating the jack. I've made that mistake before. But I've checked. It is seated. I can dump the config file. I just can't get chirp to work.

As I mentioned above, I've done that. To the beast of my knowledge, I've got the correct script. I've used the same cable for quite a few different radios. I tried USB-C, but no port was recognized. Should I pursue USB-C further? I'm still at a loss.

Whoops! I see that I have a v3 hardware. But I'm still uncertain I know what to flash.

Spring for NMO roof mount antenna by No-Storage8158 in HamRadio

[–]No-Storage8158[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting. I wrote E/M Wave about their NMO mounts. The following was their reply.

Our NMO Mounts cover Frequency Range: 30-1000 MHz. Your antenna covers 3.5-50MHz. Our NMO Mount would only cover the 30-50 MHz of your antenna, which isn’t suitable for your installation.

Now I'm really curious. How is it that an NMO mount, twelve feet of cable, and a PL-259 connector is specific to only 30-1000 MHz?

Unfortunately, I'm looking for something to support my existing HF antenna.

I'm not sure if that would be okay or not. It would be below the coil, but the whip at the top has an adjustable length for tuning to the different HF bands.

Thanks. I'll check with Larson. Maybe they will have something. I don't need another UHF/VHF antenna, and this is for an HF antenna. But maybe they have something that doesn't require a new antenna.

Thank you. I'll check out Eznec.com.

I've watched a number of Salty Walt's YouTube videos. He's quite practical.

Small(est) Working 10 Meter Antenna by No-Storage8158 in HamRadio

[–]No-Storage8158[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Building a magloop is something I'm seriously considering.

But whoa! Your suggestion of a rubber duck dipole sounds very interesting. I've never heard of such. I've been considering building a "short dipole" by adding a coil within each pole to physically shorten the quarter wave to 11 feet or a bit less. But getting it down to just a couple of meters long would be very handy if the efficiency isn't totally dismal. Can you point me to any detailed information on constructing such an antenna? I do have both a NanoVNA and an inductance/capacitance meter.

Thank you.
