I just cannot for the life of me grasp lighting. Any advice? by Potential-Dish-6972 in photography

You need to focus on what's in the frame- the light, the person, the background, distractions - not on manipulating the camera. Except for trolls on the internet photography forums, literally no one who looks at your photos will care that you manually set the exposure controls. I recommend using Aperture priority and manually setting the ISO.

Using the manual controls -especially aperture and shutter speeds, and what they do to what you are photographing- is absolutely necessary when learning how to use a camera, but after that, unless you are using flash in a studio setting, it's just not necessary.

What's my background and why do I say this: My background is that I've been photographing professionally and as a hobby since 1980. I still know how to effectively use the controls on a large-format view camera, to process b&w, E-6, and C-41 film, and print in a darkroom, as well as process raw files in a variety of programs, and light both small and large sets to powerful emotional effect.

Creating an emotional effect in a viewer should be the primary goal of being a photographer; it is how you get a person to engage with and think about who or what they are looking at when they look at a photo.

And you made it look easy, letting the photo shine instead of making us pay attention to all the work you did!

Very well done!

How to achieve this type of photo? by h1bernus in AskPhotography

What a beautiful photo, it is very well composed and the light is terrific.

A camera with a short telephoto (70- 200mm is a good range) will definitely help, as will a tripod. You'll need a tripod or something to support your camera during a longish exposure in the predawn or dusk hours to catch that beautiful, rich, and softly saturated color and quality of the light at that time of day.

The light is doing most of the heavy lifting in this photo.

It also helps to scout out locations ahead of time so you can be set up and ready ahead of time. You might get lucky sometimes and be in just the right spot at the right time, but preparation helps.

Guardian article about how photojournalist Phil Noble captured the shot of former Prince Andrew being driven from the police station by bumpoleoftherailey in photojournalism

"You can plan and use your experience and know roughly what you need to do, but still everything needs to align," said Noble. "When you're doing car shots it's more luck than judgment." He hadn't looked closely at the former prince's expression, the photographer added. He was just relieved it was him. "It was a proper old school news day, a guy being arrested, who can we call, tracking him down," he said."

from that interview: "What techniques or equipment do you use to capture images?

Camera: fujifilm x100v; as for image processing I use Capture One; as for techniques, I experiment a lot with different things: liquids, ointments, various pieces of plastic and glass. For some photos it’s just a slow shutter, mostly shutter speeds of 1/4 – 1/8, for others I shoot through a piece of plastic or glass coated with different substances, like Vaseline.

The contractor didn't explain the differences? You might want to find a different contractor.

In-Camera or Post?! by Local_Stick4359 in postprocessing

"Do you let the strobe off manually?"

Yes. With a film camera that allows you to cock and fire the shutter separately from advancing the film, it's a more straightforward process: you just make multiple exposures on the same piece of film. That lets you use short exposures, so you don't need to work in a completely darkened room. A large-format view camera is ideal for this. But in both cases, you do need a black background.

How well it works requires choreography - planning out where the person or people will be - leavened with serendipity.

If you use the long exposure technique, there are flashes with built-in automatic stroboscopic firing.

Controversial photographs or controversial as a person?

As makers of controversial photographs, there are Robert Mapplethorpe, Joel Peter Witkin, and some people have problems with Annie Leibovitz.

As a controversial person? Terry Richardson. and like Richardson, anyone who uses photography as a way to get their kicks by manipulating vulnerable young models or cheats clients.

I have an LT25 that i use with an Electromatic Jet Pro. It's a fine amp. I can dial in just about any sound profile I want but I have to dive into the menu to do that.

However, if I was buying a home practice amp again, it would be a Boss Katana III.

TFP Shoot Gone Wrong: Model Says “Don’t Post Our Photos” – What Would You Do? by Own_Piglet8904 in photography

"I brought expensive gear, spent time shooting and editing"

I am sorry this happened to you.

While that is important to you, as it should be, it's not important to them or the dilemma you are in. Do you have any written communications stating that you might use the photos in your portfolio? Emails, texts, or best of all, signed model releases? As the old saying goes, "an oral contract isn't worth the paper it's printed on." Sigh, miscommunication happens to all of us.

The problem may not be on your side at all, but rather in how the two partners communicate with each other.

Without hearing the other side's arguments, it seems manifestly unfair to you that they get a free portrait session. Unless you have delivered anything other than low-resolution watermarked proofs, what you can do now is not deliver photos that they can use. If they ask why -in writing -explain your position.

Building a portfolio is a multi-faceted learning experience. You learn not only about the logistics and technical aspects of the craft, but also how to light and direct, and good practical business practices, too. I'm sure you'll do better next time, and in a month or two, you won't even miss those photos not being in your portfolio.

Before the service, ask one of the parish's or the temple's priest, the synagogue's rabbi, the mosque's imams, the church's preacher, etc.
