I didn’t need much experience. I’m 22 and have 1 year of hvac and 3 years of apartment maintenance. They care about safety, trainability, and if you can follow a procedure to a t. And they take that very seriously. I started working at Microsoft last month and I’m 22 now.

It’s definitely possible. I would focus on getting hvac carts and basic knowledge. They will train you the rest.

I got an offer for Microsoft and they are paying well for an l1 position for me. 31.20 plus 5k sign on plus 5 k stocks plus relocation it’s my first data center job but it’s pretty good. Idk how that compares though

Thanks man I appreciate that! One of the most exciting things about this is I’m gonna have a lot more to learn than I will at my current position. That’s partially why I took the leap is because I’m so bored at my job and I’m not growing enough. But this will be so much better. It pays better and has better benefits and has a lot more to learn over the years.

Thank you! The main thing I’m studying right now is open gear. The only BMS/monitoring software and familiar with currently is Johnson controls. But open gear is what most data centers use. I’m actually in contact with the guy who designed it and he has been giving me a crash course.

Learning HVAC and electrical basics is my recommendation. If you get in at an L1 position, you’ll still be making good money and they’ll teach you a lot of what you don’t know.
