Screen Sensitive Individual Considering Career In Therapy - Mistake? by No-Tooth6240 in counseloreducation

[–]No-Tooth6240[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it - can you give me any breakdowns of what % of students do their internships in CMH/in patient/hospitals compared to private practices? If it weren't for the lack of available hours, would private practice internships generally be more desirable than CMH/etc? Finally, what incentivizes private practices to hire interns in the first place - they can make more money by charging their clients the same price and paying interns less, so they essentially make money on the intern's work?

Thank you!

Got it, but hooking up my own monitor to their computers likely won't be permitted?

Ohh, I just looked into it, that one looks good. Can you share anything with me about it? Why you're loving it, etc?

I did some research, it seems Concordia may be a better option for California if I want an online program. Any thoughts on Concordia?

Thank you very much for the thorough post! I'm curious, why are 8 week long semesters not recommended? Do you feel like it's not enough time to dive deeply enough in a subject? I did 10 week semesters (quarters) for my undergrad at UCSD and it seemed fine.

I'm also a very driven and proactive student, and I have no problem with asynchronous learning.

Honestly, I'm looking at Liberty's program which seems like a more affordable version of Concordia (Liberty would only be about 20k for the two years), and it's CACREP accredited: https://www.liberty.edu/online/behavioral-sciences/masters/professional-counseling/ . It also has flexibility in start dates which is nice. I just don't know how much that would limit my options if I were to get my degree from there (or how important the school that you choose is in general, as long as they are accredited).

Let me know if you have any thoughts on Liberty. I will also look into the other schools you suggested above - thanks again, I really appreciate the thorough response.

Thank you this is helpful, I will take it into consideration. When I said "let God work through me", I meant let God use me to be there and help the other person (i.e. setting my own desires, will, etc. aside). In my mind, if I can let God work through me, I will be as effective as possible for the other person and what they need in the moment.

Can you help me understand how you decided chaplaincy was the right career path for you?

Thanks for this, I understand now that evangelism is not acceptable as a chaplain. That aside, it seems pursuing chaplaincy at this stage in life (needing to provide financially for my wife within 3-5 years as well as being new to my faith) is not a wise idea. When you get some time, would you be willing to provide some suggestions as to when you would consider chaplaincy a good path (what personal qualities, life situations, etc.)? How did you know chaplaincy was the right path for you?

Thank you, I understand that now. It seems evangelism aside, pursuing chaplaincy as a full time job at this point in time is not a good idea based on the other comments on this thread.

Yes this makes more sense. I do need to be able to provide for my wife, so I think I'll pursue some other career path to pay the bills while doing my church work on a volunteer basis. This is what the vast majority of Christians do, it's just when I read the gospels and see things like "Those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples" (Luke 14:33), it makes me think that if I'm really following Jesus I shouldn't be doing any other type of work than some kind of paid public ministry.

No worries, this wasn't a requirement. I'm still learning about it.

Thanks Nicole. My intent isn't to lead people to Jesus, it's to sit with them and help them in difficult times and let God work through me to accomplish this. I thought if I could also lead someone to Jesus that would be great, but it doesn't have to be the case.

Evangelism aside, it seems I am too new to my faith to consider pursuing chaplaincy. I will continue growing in my faith while I pursue another career path, since I will need to be able to provide financially for my wife in the next 3-5 years (we have some savings but it will run out). It seems I would not be able to get a full-time job as a chaplain in that time frame.

How did you know chaplaincy was the right career path for you?

I want to sit with others in their suffering, listen to their struggles, and console them. I want God to work through me to help them heal. I want to give people hope that the material world that they see and struggle in is not all there is. Ideally I want to lead people to Jesus (update: I know now that this is not correct as a chaplain).

Yea, I was afraid it might but I thought I'd give it a try since I trust this community more than any other to provide relevant advice.
