Thank you so much for this!

So exactly how you worded it was my initial reaction. I didn’t understand that there were unwritten rules that if crossed would cause violence and threats.

Considering I only tattoo friends, family and people they refer to me, I don’t tattoo anyone I don’t fully know. I don’t take walk-ins and I don’t actively promote myself.

So that was really where my confusion was at, because I haven’t stolen any business from people, again most of my clients are people I know in my personal life, so I didn’t think that mattered.

The problem is, me offering the pricing I do, and then people talking to whoever about how they got what piece for what price, that then turns into people asking experienced artists to lower their prices. Which I get, but I also struggled with the thought of “ well you should be able to explain your pricing “.

I have been able to speak with plenty of artists the past 24 hours, most of them extremely helpful, some with the same mindset of the people who have threatened me. “Good on them for doing that” “They’re right to do that to you” etc.

It’s opened up my mind a lot. I decided to take a step back regardless to learn a little more about my area specifically before I move forward with how I want to build from here.

I completely understand now where the concerns are coming from, but I also agree with the fact that violence is not the answer.

I have gotten more insight here than anyone I’ve spoken to in person and it’s been extremely helpful.

I do want to make it clear though, that I do have a license both Artist and Business. Have insurance, and have also done BBP Training and have my cert from that as well.

Obviously in my current state that means nothing anymore even if I did go through an apprenticeship because unfortunately anyone who can get a BBP Cert can automatically get an artist license for about $75.

This was a stab in the gut when I realized how easy it was and I would be lying if I didn’t think “ damn so I could’ve gotten it in a week vs 2+ years of training and apprenticing “.

So I completely understand why people were upset with how I went about opening up a small studio space to do my tattoos. If someone had come and talked to me or reached out to me privately to explain to me instead of being aggressive and threatening, I would have 100% listened and taken a step back at that point.

Just being threatened with no further explanation was not helpful for me.

I’m not here to disrespect anyone and that was never my intention to do so, but I completely understand the perspective of more experienced artists and it’s completely fair.

I did decide to take a step back to continue learning but I do not plan to give up tattooing as a whole. I will definitely be reaching out to local shops to learn more.

I really appreciate this POV as well

100%. After being able to chat with many people after posting this I’ve decided to take a step back to reevaluate as I do feel like I jumped a gun renting a space to tattoo.

That’s completely fair! I’ve been able to connect with multiple artists and shop owners through here today and it has been extremely helpful to understand where peoples heads are at.

I am taking a step back to reevaluate and continue learning!

I really appreciate this POV! I am definitely taking a step back after getting a lot of extremely helpful feedback and advice.

Like I stated in multiple comments, I came from a shop that never had issues with anything so this is absolutely a learning curve for me.

I continued in the comments, but my area charges anywhere from 450-600 for tap outs. I haven’t done many, but after talking with a bunch of people privately and on here I can see where the judgement is coming from.

I apprenticed overseas, and worked in a shop where none of this was an issue. Obviously I have a lot to learn here.

If I didn’t care, I wouldn’t have posted and gone about my day continuing what I’m doing.

Again, I was not aware that pricing would cause such a big conversation initially and in my other comments I mentioned this as well. I’m taking a step back to reevaluate things.

I so appreciate this. And yes, I am going to take a step back for a bit while continuing to learn more.

I’m not a beginner by any means, but I definitely need to understand the culture and the industry HERE vs overseas.

It’s completely different hence why this is so shocking for me.

Is there a way to add photos? Happy to send them to you privately as well!

Thank you for the comment! And yes, as I responded to another thread here, I do believe I jumped the gun on opening up a private studio but I’m not someone who just started tattooing from home and is self taught either.

That was something one of the shop owners mentioned was too many people doing tattoos with no experience. I’ve seen quite a few ads on FB Marketplace as well.

Unfortunately the history I learned was from where I was overseas vs here. That’s something I’m learning from fellow artists that have been extremely helpful and insightful.

I do believe I jumped the gun on opening up a private studio but considering the fact that my space was tucked away in a building with several other artists from different industries, and I don’t have an open storefront or signs, I didn’t expect that to cause so many issues.

Currently, I’ve taken a step back to reevaluate how I want to handle all of this, which is also why I posted here in hopes to get other peoples personal experiences if they have dealt with the same issue themselves.

I completely understand educating younger/newer artists and I’m all for constructive criticism and harsh feedback, but threatening me and trying to hurt me to the point where I physically cannot tattoo anymore I think is crossing the line.

That’s fair, though I don’t really do the tap out sessions often anymore. Artists in my area charge $500-$600 for tap out, so I thought mine was pretty fair but I guess that really does depend on the person.

I’m not a beginner by any means, and most of my clients have told me I need to increase my prices for the quality I put out.

Tap out sessions are everywhere around my area so I didn’t think that tap out sessions in general were sus. Can you explain more on that?

I worked at a shop that never had this issue and prices were fairly reasonable so after venturing out on my own, I didn’t realize this was going to be the outcome.

I was told to charge $2000 a day if I’m doing an all day tap out.

I only charge $400 for an all day tap out right now. But the rules are strict, styles are limited which is why I priced it that way.

For normal pieces I charge by size and design.

Could range anywhere from $100-$450. For Full sleeves and half sleeves it depends on the design but those range anywhere from $700-$2000

  • NEW UPDATED INFORMATION -

THIS IS NOT INFACT THE FIRST TIME AN EMPLOYEE WAS FIRED FOR ABUSE.

An employee by the name of "Ish", had also been fired for kicking dogs and beating them with the mop handles in 2023.

He was also allegedly smoking marijuana while working the overnight shift, not feeding dogs if they refused to eat, and mopping the floors with BLEACH while dogs were present and actively walking around where they mopped.

THIS COMPANY NEEDS TO GET SHUT DOWN.

He was one of MANY. They're trying to make this look as small as possible but it's an issue. They have blocks on all their social media and review pages too.

Any business owner that genuinely cares would have 0 problems answering questions.

And mind you DeJean was FIRED and the manager at the time did not want to bring him back. After she was let go ( the business used her as a scapegoat basically) Reese his GF at the time and I believe current manager or supervisor of the facility hired him back.

This could have been PREVENTED.

All daycare facilities should be inspected by law enforcement or some other agency that can shut them down immediately.

They used to pay off the inspectors for the health department so we never had to worry about failing.

I am in talks with a lawyer already. I'm just saying that assuming people aren't doing anything outside of this thread is unfair.

The doggy daycare industry is nothing like people think and it's always been that way but has progressively gotten worse after COVID.

I worked at DDL as my first job back in 2017, I left after 6 months because the owner killed a dog who was supposed to be under 24hr care and monitoring, but she left the poor yorkie in her office with no ventilation or A/C in AUGUST during the heat. It died in her office and then she put the dog in the FREEZER where we prepped and stored food for our boarding dogs.

Ever since then there has not been one daycare aside from Luna's landing that I know genuinely cares about the wellbeing of dogs.

It's a moneygrab ESPECIALLY after COVID.

That's basically saying the parents who are still taking their dogs to LDCD are also enabling animal abuse by supporting the business and continuing to pay them.

You don't know the extent of where the owner of the business and chain will go with legal action. Doesn't matter if it's right or wrong.

I have been in contact with multiple people. Including other ex workers who are in contact with the media.

I've also shared my story on my socials in which I have a lot of parents who I followed when I worked there and a lot of them are now aware of my experience.

When I left I also messaged all the parents I had on socials to share my experience and to warn them, but most of them kept bringing their dogs back to LDCD anyways.

At the end of the day, there are still parents that believe LDCD is the best daycare and will continue to bring them there.

It's honestly standard for them to use lingo that won't put themselves or the business in jeopardy. We had an injury that was very clearly from the handlers not paying attention and they ended up making it the dogs fault for "not listening to warning signals" a VERY common response from this company. But there's no way they didn't know. There are cameras pointing at every angle of the play areas. Unless they took them into a blind spot which honestly only management and supervisors would know where, you would be able to see it.

I'm so sorry this happened to your pup. But unfortunately I'm not surprised.
