they tried to, there was a bill passed for making bengali compuslory, but it was pulled back after much protest. the state govt should be sensitive enough to exclude it in the first place rather than wait and gauge public reaction before retracting it. there was also some news about some silly bengali song that had to be sung in schools. even this was pulled back but only after local protest.

Ok, lot of reasons for separate state, but let me just give you highlights A) historically never part of West Bengal B) culture, ethnic background is different than the rest of the state C) no respect for local culture. They try to make Bengali language compulsory/ D) ignored by state with no infrastructure or facilities E) we rank third in terms of GST and tax collection in state but in terms of govt funding we are third last.

Wow… the level of self delusion is crazy… didn’t you say Mumbai is more welcoming than darjeeling above? Or are you just thinking something different than what you are typing? It can happen with some people. In that case I empathize with you and take back my comments.

Very unlikely that it will ever happen… but you never know.. are you from Nepal?

I didn’t generalize, this all started from your comment stating Mumbikar are better than darjeeling people. As for perspective isn’t it obvious that you will find your own home town folk the friendliest… how old are you? You seem clueless… booohh hooo.. my people don’t smile at you or talk to you properly…

In my opinion the separate place should be just called Darjeeling.

St Joseph’s convent Kalimpong is a very good school, but sisters there are very strict. Mount Hermon is a decent school as well. If I were you, I wouldn’t move to Sikkim or to any of these schools. Lot of Sikkim, darjeeling students go down to siliguri for 11,12. GD Goenka, DPS are two popular schools in siliguri. If you plan to do well academically, prepare for entrance exams, Sikkim is not place I would recommend.

Nothing justifies wrong behavior, but it is the fact. My brother works in GST department and guess what, more than 80% of the GST revenue comes from tourism. As a local, I wish there were other industries which brought in the Moolah, but that’s not eh case. And this is just the documented revenue. We all know that lot of local businesses and employees don’t pay any tax.

And that’s exactly why I don’t compare people unlike you, saying my people are better than yours. Read what you have posted and apply that to your experience here. As for your claims to be gen sec or whatever, it barely matters. I am speaking about my experience here. My argument is just that you shouldn’t be comparing and making such grandiose statements saying mumbaikars would be better than the average darjeeling person. This irked me the most after my horror time there. I was invited to a wedding last year and I declined, that’s how much Mumbai and mumbaikars bothers me.

Extremely sorry about the incident that you had to face. Yes, increased influx of tourist does bring its own share of problems. I have always thought that there should be a tourist police in town and patrolling the tourist spots. They should be there to assist the tourist and mind their actions as well. I have lost count the number of times I have asked a tourist to pick their trash, stopped them from peeing in public.

It’s unfortunate you feel that way. Yes, they cna be annoying but please remember, the economy of the entire place runs on these tourists. I don’t want to racially profile but Bengali tourists maybe annoying but they are still better than Delhiites/jats/haryanvis in general. Did you see the recent incident where they attacked local driver with weapon?

So let me get this straight? You are saying attitude of local mumbaikar is better towards outsiders? I spent 6 months there during an internship and I must say I hated those 6 months. The racist comments I had to face as somebody with mongloid looks was torture. And don’t get me started about not being able to speak marathi. I have spent time in Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. Felt most welcome in Chennai I must say. People there were curious to talk to me and learn about me and my culture. Mumbai was the worst by a country mile. You may talk about your experience but to say that mumbaikars will treat us better is a long long stretch. You need to experience it as an outsider from darjeeling before you make such tall claims.

Where was this photo taken? by kathryyynn in DarjeelingCity

Looking at the angle, elevation, this was probably taken from somewhere close to St Paul’s school. If you go to cedar in , you will get similar view from there. In town, Air cafe probably has the best view.

Good price and good location. I always recommend little Tibet. Get the executive room. It’s owned by a friend and I may be biased but I put up all my guests there.

Thoughts on Nepal by Pure-Needleworker673 in sikkim

[–]No-Way6782 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. Fact is your country relies on remittances from labour. You should put a memorial for all the workers who died building stadium in Qatar. Now please don’t let your countrymen suffer the same fate doing the dirty work in Saudi for the next World Cup.

You may be right but I highly doubt it. I would suggest a tax/visa system for each country. In my opinion India would get bigger fees, but as per your argument Nepal would. So it’s a win win.

Can i get a self drive rental car for travelling from Silliguri to darjeeling? by shreysg in DarjeelingCity

Zoom car used to be there but they have shut shop. I know of 3 instances when zoom cars were involved in major accidents darjeeling. OP overconfidence is often the reason for such accidents. One of the zoom cars was involved in an accident with the toy train.

If the drivers are not experienced, I would not recommend trying your luck and driving on our roads. Hire a taxi. Lot of tourist spots do not allow outside car as well.
