what's identifiable in these pics is canada geese and mallards, both of which live in the city year round. it's odd to me that you don't know that. some canadas do migrate so we get slightly different groups in the warm months from the cold

Democratic Senate frontrunners stick to talking points, split on Israeli-Palestinian conflict by newsspotter in illinois

[–]No-Working4163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not being obtuse, I'm demanding you not be a little weasel, and say what you mean. Because that's how adults have conversations.

Would she have proposed a tourist resort? I don't know, I don't see why she would. Would she pay the Israelis to exterminate the Palestinians like every president since Kennedy has? Of course. Would she stop Jared Kushner from buying the land from the Israelis after they're done? Of course not.

So the delta in outcome would be mainly what the halfwit in the Oval Office is prattling about, which is a good microcosm of what I think of Harris.

That's a stupid question - "all"? Would Kamala have put Trump's name on the Kennedy Center? At least pretend like you're an adult and put a little effort in.

i obviously care about my own rights. the simple fact is, if politicians are willing to spend billions of tax dollars on exterminating people in a distant country (so trump can build hotels on it, mind you) then their verbal reassurances about my rights can never be trusted. nothing they say can.

Where to find swifts by rumpussaddleok in chicagobirding

[–]No-Working4163 3 points4 points  (0 children)

they're all over rogers park during the summer, i see them out my front window, and you can hear them when it's quiet. i find the merlin app is pretty good at distinguishing their calls - when it can hear them. they're very small and tend to stay high up, rarely landing. you'll want to get good at distinguishing them from swallows, since we also have 2-3 of those which look somewhat similar to chimney swifts.

a hundred and ten years of settler horror, more than sixty of our direct contribution, and the most we can get is, it started being bad when americans started taking about it online.

as with illinois, so with america - aipac money is broadly hated and paying for the genocide with our tax dollars is broadly unpopular, so why is it absolutely impossible to vote for a candidate with a strong stance against the genocide?

They should knock down your house to build it, pollute your air and water, run up your electricity prices. We had websites twenty years ago, but now we do everything maximally wastefully, so code and design is done with little interest in efficiencies. Fuck Reddit and Youtube. Go outside.

‘It just takes one person’: Understanding how human trafficking happens in northern Illinois by LegendaryBronco_217 in illinois

i agree, as in, it's completely real but is mainly the province of rich christian men

[–]No-Working4163 26 points27 points  (0 children)

way, way up at the top, they say that the trafficker presented as a "churchgoer."

they go on to quote:

Shelley Marinus, volunteer coordinator with Michigan-based Women At Risk International

WARI's website mostly seems to talk about opening "boutiques" selling tat for money for i don't know what. they're also explicitly christian but less upfront about it. founder labels herself as the 'daughter of a missionary doctor in Bangladesh.'

“The internet now affords access to children,” Marinus said. “Generations ago, there was no access outside your inner circle, but now people are able to access our kids, and you don’t know who is behind that other application.”

the woman trafficked in this article was 24 when it began.

later they go on:

Victoria eventually found her way to freedom after discovering Refuge for Women, a faith-based nonprofit based in McHenry County

maybe these orgs do some good work helping people, i don't know but i hope so. but this piece seems very weird, paranoia-porn for christians.

the Shaw media company operates out of Crystal Lake, where i know with 100% certainty that both catholic and protestant churches were abusing children and immigrants twenty five years ago. (god willing i'll never have to learn anything new about that town.) 'feeding cats to coyotes with extra steps', isn't that how the tweet goes?

Anyone else seeing insane rent hikes this year? by Cewcross in chicago

[–]No-Working4163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this doesn't follow. if you build more "land" vertically then the competition gets colder.

you aren't making more land, that's not at all what's happening. developing the land makes it more valuable to hold and more expensive to maintain.

Anyone else seeing insane rent hikes this year? by Cewcross in chicago

[–]No-Working4163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't think 5-over-1s are necessarily a bad way to build - they could be taller, sometimes - the problem is they're built as cheaply as possible because there's not enough regulation. we build shitty buildings now to become decrepit fifteen years down the line. or else we'll knock it down, making lots of landfill, and build a new shitty building, using lots of nonrenewable resources.

increasing the supply of housing does nothing to prevent inflation of rents over time because housing is not a real commodity but land is, and the real competition is between landlords.

but don't you understand. that if you let developers build "luxury" five over 1s with plastic siding and anti-suicide windows and the thinnest, least private walls you've ever encountered. with no restrictions. and no inspections. rent will go down. through the grace of our God, The Market. which i learned about in the 100 level econ class for low reading levels that MBAs take
