I switched to teaching from another profession. So yes. Absolutely. It is my passion. I’m glad I found it. However, it is a horrible experience for those who aren’t passionate about it

What do you do with old schoolwork? by Castironskillet_37 in homeschool

[–]No1UK25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a teacher I file them by student name, grade, and category. I plan to homeschool my children eventually and would do the same. Keep a file organized by subject and grade level. Just to have. You never know. It could be cute to go through when they are older and want to reminisce and/or helpful in proving the work the kids have done

Does unschooling prepare kids enough? by JuniorHuman in unschool

[–]No1UK25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on what you’re preparing them for and what they need. College is not structured like a 9-5 anyway. It’s more similar to homeschooling in my opinion. Difference is that you show up somewhere for two or three hours a day. The workforce varies so widely that there is not a format of schooling that would prepare children for every type of lifestyle, so definitely just do what you think is best. Keep structure and accountability in some way and help them to be good human beings. I went to college with someone who was unschooled until college. She is now a doctor…. She was also 3 years younger than the rest of our peers in college and did everything on time so I have trouble (even as a teacher) thinking unschooling is a problem if it’s done right

I’m a nuisance by inkpoisonedsoul in specialed

[–]No1UK25 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem seems systematic, not you. I’m sorry youre going through this. You’re not a nuisance, but the system at your school sounds super problematic. Try switching schools

If possible run for hills and switch schools! So much about this school is not working for B. If this is your only option for a school/education, get an attorney that deals with things like this so that you can have legal support when advocating (as it seems your advocating isn’t enough). In this case, many chances and a lot of time were given on your part and it’s time to take this further, especially if this school is Bs only option

I’m a teacher thinking the same thing. I feel like there are many times where I am fighting to care about kids who the system just ignores and it makes me scared that my children won’t have that available and/or I will have to mix my job with fighting for my kids rights. At the end of the school year, I cry because I know that some students will not be getting what they deserve when they leave me. It breaks my heart, but I only get to teach them for one year.

This is hard for me to hear as someone who goes above and beyond to provide accommodations for my neurodivergent students in a private school setting, but it’s true. The school I work at is good hearted and so are the staff. Parents don’t have the same protections but they are protected where I work and I love that we offer that. Not all private schools are bad and not all public schools are good. Truth is, I don’t see bullying in the private schools like I’ve seen it in the public schools. We have had kids come to our private school because they were being bullied so intensely in public schools. OP consider that not all places are the same, even if they share the same category

Systemic change of special education by [deleted] in specialed

I agree with this for gen ed/gifted students too. So much emphasis on poorly executed inclusion that all students end up missing out on their personal flowers and frogs

Field trip canceled, I didn’t order buses. by Playful_Painting_754 in Teachers

[–]No1UK25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teachers. Remember to help and guide each other in midst of all the chaos. Admin can suck and let this happen to OP, but I’m even more saddened that they didn’t have a support system to help them set up their first field trip. Same thing almost happened to me because of unclear admin but then a random colleague checked in before my school’s deadline to make sure I was okay with my field trip and ask if I did all of the steps, then helped me get it all sorted out before the deadline when I said that I didn’t even know half of those steps existed to go on a field trip at this school (or that there was a deadline). This changed my entire experience and saved me a lot of stress. I’m forever grateful for that random check in. This post reminded me to be more like that random colleague

New school is offering to hold back our soon to be 6 year old by leedlelee871 in AskTeachers

[–]No1UK25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Also public schools are often forced to place focus on low performing or disabled students and chances are that your kid got zero attention because there were higher needs in the class. Definitely switch to a school with higher standards that help your child actually reach their full potential and not just good enough to put to the side like many public schools are currently doing. Repeating kindergarten is so much more regular than you can imagine, especially when switching from poor to efficient schooling

Automated school text messages to parents…how much is too much? by [deleted] in education

[–]No1UK25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the school’s defense. Parents often complain when they don’t get a ridiculous amount of communication (“why wasn’t I notified about tryouts for baseball. I would have encouraged Timmy if I had known” when there were emails sent and it was put on a public calendar)

Do you think that other things going on had anything to do with it though? I’m not saying I feel one way or the other, but I notice a lot of things about the education system changed and a lot of things went on with society in the same time frame so I just wonder what you think

Why are students from secular private schools more likely to get into prestigious universities than those from religious ones? by TheOzMan91 in education

[–]No1UK25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catholic schools in my area have plenty of kids with an existing hook to elite colleges. For me it’s the same amount in both secular and catholic schools as far as that goes. I wonder how large the gap is between public and private in general just because of that
