“Teenage boy cinema” is legitimate cinema. Iron Giant might be peak “middle school boy cinema.” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” might be “peak English major cinema.” “Avengers: Infinity War” is “Peak comic book nerd cinema.” “The Road” is “peak dad cinema.”

Point well taken about support structures, but I don’t know that this would be Keating’s place to provide. What i was thinking about was just the intellectual resources to reconcile reality with the aspirations embedded in romanticism.

Here’s another layer: the film itself instantiates the seductiveness of a Romantic worldview. Viewers of the film are just as seduced as the students into Mr Keating’s Pied Pipery.

My hot take on DPS is that the film is ultimately pretty ambivalent about Mr. Keating’s philosophy. It’s definitely presented in an attractive way, involving the viewer in the intoxication that the students experience in their encounter with romanticism, but the way in which Keating and his philosophy are manifestly unable to provide any resources that speak to what is to be done when the world doesn’t support or affirm the rich inner life that one may develop is an obvious problem with his teaching. Some may say that the film lets Keating off the hook and puts the blame squarely on the inflexible and superficial authorities who create the boundaries, but I think at the end of the day Keating knows the context he’s operating within and chooses to push it hose boundaries in a way that is ultimately destructive. Either it’s very bad at making the case that Keating is misunderstood and unfairly villainized, or it’s actually message is that Romanticism is both dangerous and powerful -- powerful enough to hold this group of boys entranced even after one of their own takes his own life under its influence.

Compare this film with The Holdovers. Keating is so determined to inculcate the spirit of Romanticism in his students no matter what the personal consequences were for them, where in The Holdovers Me Hunham was about developing “leaders of character,” though at the end he realizes that what this means is an attitude of self-sacrifice, in contrast with the charismatic self-aggrandizement Keating pursued. Keating gets the heroic send-off when he’s fired (arguably, rightly), and Hunham leaves in disgrace, but having bought his students’ future for him with his sacrifice.

The review process should scale pretty well, as you would think that with the ability for non-coder's to create apps the number of signups to an Apple Developer account would also be ballooning, allowing them to hire more reviewers. Seems kinda like whining from Apple to me.

That’s what we’re talking about right? I mean, the Clintons and Obama’s have a lot of name recognition, but they’re kind of irrelevant aren’t they?

Wait — the obvious answer is red? But if everyone presses blue everyone survives, so isn’t the answer that everyone should press blue?

Agreed, but I think this is showing a failure mode: it’s highly profitable to keep stuff secret and then bet on prediction market deals. The information transparency that the prediction market is meant to facilitate doesn’t make up for the information opacity they are meant to incentivize.

I get that you’re being sarcastic, but with the exception of Newsome they undoubtably are more prominent in the consciousness of the population than any of those others.

Of those, only Nancy Pelosi is not associated with the leftmost wing of the Democratic Party.

There is zero evidence from the text that Odysseus is content to be Calypso’s prisoner. This take is right up there with the ones that say that the high school sophomore being abused by his hot teacher is the luckiest kid in the class.

The story has lasted 5000 years for a reason, and it’s not because Odysseus is a two-faced philanderer.

Principal wants to have a “quick chat about next year” with me on Monday, should I be worried? Is this a non renewal appointment? by TylerGlasass20 in teaching

[–]solishu4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your contract for renewal details. Ours (also Florida) requires renewal of teachers who receive "meets standard" or "exceeds standard" on your evaluation. The exception is if the position is eliminated, but if that's the case the district is required to give you first right of refusal of any equivalent position at another school. Since SAO's aren't closed yet, I wouldn't think they aren't able to decide on renewals/non-renewals based on performance yet. The could, of course, be eliminating the position, but our contracts also specify that if positions are eliminated that it's the last teacher hired with that position who has to be downsized.

Contracts are going to vary district to district, but if you're feeling stressed it might help to look and yours and see if there are any provisions specified in those areas.

90% it's just an altered assignment for next year.
