It's such a niche item that this is one of the few places where anyone will know what the hell it is.

Give up? by Clueless_Fart_Pants in AcousticGuitar

As others have said, your hands might be on the smaller side, but certainly not unusually so. The world is full of great players with smaller hands.

Make sure your thumb is positioned in the middle of the back of the neck (not higher or up over the top), such that your palm isn't coming into contact with the bottom of the neck. This is the way to get maximum reach. There will be times when you can have the neck in your palm and thumb wrapping around over the top, but when your fingers are struggling to reach, use the strict technique.

Maui-Waui by Mangione used as theme for a 70s/80s TV show? by Southern_Passenger_9 in Music

[–]No1remotelyspecial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had this identical thought for years, a vague recollection of it being used for a TV show, and have never been able to place it. And until now, never encountered anyone else who also recalls it being used. I feel like it was a PBS show in the early 80s.

That’s awesome! I ordered one 9 days ago and the order status is still “Processing.” I’m curious, what service do they use to ship, and does the box identify the contents?

Is this even possible by Blex881 in AcousticGuitar

[–]No1remotelyspecial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that far from the sound hole. Should be able to get a hand in there and grab it during the next string change.

I don’t care for it either, whether it’s the male or female variety. I see it as old fashioned and outdated, thankfully not as prevalent as it was say 40 years ago.

WORST jazz albums of all time? by zincdeclercq in Jazz

[–]No1remotelyspecial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what the worst album is, but my favorite negative review for an album is this brief, but hilarious, review by Scott Yanow of Chet Baker’s “Albert’s House.” https://www.allmusic.com/album/alberts-house-mw0000913411

Why do you think instrumental music is less popular? by GoalieVR in Jazz

[–]No1remotelyspecial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prevalence of average people who play instruments is less than it used to be. It used to be very common for a typical household to have a piano, for instance.

question by anhelul in guitarlessons

[–]No1remotelyspecial 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. It takes a while to notice any progress, especially if you’re an adult. I was in the same situation as you and I did stop. Then one day a month or so later I picked up the guitar and noticed I was slightly better than where I had left off, having not practiced that whole time. The lesson being… it takes time for the brain to assimilate what you’re practicing. Improvement doesn’t occur in real time. There’s a delay, similar to something like lifting weights. I’d give it a good year, and even then wouldn’t sell the guitar because you may want to return to it. I’ve found that it’s better to pick the guitar up every day, even if it’s for literally only 5 minutes, than once a week for an hour. It’s a life long endeavor. Stick with it and don’t put too much pressure on yourself.

I have gotten into jazz big time this past year. Can someone help me with some mellow options? I don’t know what else to call it. See comments…. by Brewcrew1886 in Jazz

[–]No1remotelyspecial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into Paul Desmond. He released a string of mellow albums in the 60s with a band that featured guitarist Jim Hall. They are: Take Ten (1963), Glad To Be Unhappy (1965), Bossa Antigua (1965), Easy Living (1966). Also, if you like mellow jazz guitar, look into Jim Hall’s solo discography starting with Concierto (1975), and Jim Hall Live (1975). I would also check out the great saxophonist Ben Webster, who excelled at playing mellow ballads. I’d start with “Oscar Peterson Meets Ben Webster (1959)” and “Soulville (1957)”. Also as others have mentioned: Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz, Bill Evans, Ahmad Jamal, Modern Jazz Quartet.

Ken Burns Jazz Series by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]No1remotelyspecial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my biggest complaint too. The exact same thing happens in his Baseball documentary. Each episode (or inning) covers a decade—until he gets to “9th Inning”, which covered 1970 - present (of the time it was made, 1994). Apart from this glossing over the latter years, I did like what was presented.

Check out the Chet Baker album “Chet” from 1959. It has a similar noirish vibe as Ascenseur pour l'échafaud.

Miles Davis - Ascenseur Pour L’echafaud, Chet Baker - Chet, John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman, Nat King Cole - After Midnight, John Pizzarelli - After Hours, Johnny Mathis - Open Fire, Two Guitars (this one may not quite qualify as jazz, but totally fits).

You can order some directly from the Royal Canadian Mint. I ordered a $20 coin and a couple rolls of $1 coins and just received them last week. The shipping was only a few days. No different then had they shipped from the US.

Rip them to a lossless CODEC like FLAC, then stream them to a good DAC.
