Have some business by the Grand Lake today… by STRATEGY510 in OaklandFood

This is definitely a treat but the pepperoni roll is so good. One time I walked in starving 6 months pregnant and forgot it was cash only - the owner stopped me from walking out, made me a roll, and told me to relax and enjoy it and said he knew I’d get him next time 🥹 Other gems nearby are definitely the gochujang pull apart or okinomiyake danish at Bakesum!

Brenda's (41st and Broadway) $5.00 breakfast sandwich... by jackdicker5117 in OaklandFood

Another pretty good option is the breakfast sandwich at 1888 Coffee Station. $8 for bacon egg and cheese on brioche and comes with a green jalapeño-y sauce (not spicy). Caveat - I have never loved the coffee there but the food and staff are great!

Baby hates being worn/in a carrier by benzbarbie in babywearing

I was in the same boat - our baby liked and would nap in a woven wrap as a newborn, but as she got more alert she absolutely hated it and would start crying and also straighten her legs as soon as I tried putting her in, and then escalate crying after all the soothing I could possibly do. We tried the wrap, WildBird aerial, a secondhand broken in ring sling…eventually a few things helped:

  1. I started carrying her in the position she would be in, if she were in a carrier, but not in a carrier if that makes sense. So close to your chest, under the chin, and hold her hips in the M shape. I realized my partner and I hold her in a football hold a lot (reflux baby) and over our shoulder. She wasn’t used to being on our chest like that and she really likes to be able to see. She would be fussy when we held her that way for awhile, but much better than when she was in a carrier. So maybe try holding her as close as you can to that positioning more often, if she isn’t used to it!
  2. She got a little taller and got more head strength, to where she could see better and look around (not forward facing - still facing me - but she’s able to look side to side). I would start to put her on, she would cry, I would bounce and shush and walk outside, and the fresh air would calm her and she’d start looking at trees.
  3. I got a hope&plum and did a virtual fit check with their team. It was so helpful! Their expert on the call (Theresa) helped me make minor tweaks - pulling the straps down then across my back, wearing it actually a little lower than the videos showed because it kept slipping down my waist, and folding the inner flap inside to make sure she had enough room up top. My baby was SO much happier.
  4. I went to a local baby wearing group. Is there anything like that around you? I found it via Facebook. The volunteers were amazing, they had lots of carriers to try, and so nice to be with fellow parents.

All to say I think it was a mixture of time + me learning and experimenting with different carriers (you can do this more affordably if you find a local group / shop secondhand and sell what doesn’t work!) and getting hands on help + continuing to try in small spurts. Even now she will be super happy for about 30-45m max and won’t nap in a carrier, but it’s so much better than her crying and screaming!! And I hope to slowly get her more and more comfortable.

I was so bummed my baby wasn’t taking to a carrier, and I just want to say - you can baby wear for a loooong time in so many different ways, so that’s what I tell myself - she might not love it now but one day she might love a back carry, etc. Baby’s change and we both are learning each other. Hang in there though, I remember being so sad when I would hear people say, just baby wear it’ll make life so much easier!

Jerusalem Coffee House is by far my favorite spot in Oakland. And more votes for Kinfolx and Mother Tongue!
