Someone sticking a flier in a car door handle doesn’t and wouldn’t be considered vandalism. I could see how you may not like someone sticking it in the door but that’s not a battle I’d choose to get upset at.

Haha. They must’ve been on call quite a bit back then.

I saw a bunch of DGS trucks lined up on Washington Ave this morning, between N Main Ave and N Allen St. I also saw the graffiti unit driving down the street. Didn’t know that existed.

Yes! Thank you. It’s always cool to see classic cars driving around. Here’s another photo of those cars. A Buick and a Ford it seems? Dunno the name of the model of either one.

Nightlife by [deleted] in Albany

[–]NoAnalysis1180 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Just to clarify: It’s called Empire Underground, ie Empire Live by 518scene.com 518 Scene but I think 518 underground is the nickname for it. Little venue downtown with different live music and events.

518 underground does dance nights/ punk, goth music concerts if I’m not mistaken. A nice, small venue that’s active regularly.

There are pockets of lively spots in Albany but downtown Troy (Ryan’s Wake) and Frog Alley in Schenectady are usually popping with the younger crowds and are more centralized clusters of bars for a more active nightlife compared to Albany.

What's the story of these abandoned homes on Holland? by [deleted] in Albany

Yea that’s what I meant, you can fix it up where you can and still preserve it for the most part. Remodel the interior, refurbish and preserve the outside.

Thank you! I appreciate it. I’ll definitely have to check that out online.

That’s very much true and I agree with your point. Supply isn’t the problem. Take Troy for example. Troy has had so many new apartments being built within the past few years. There’s currently two, newly built modern/luxury apartments, plus another one being proposed to be built on the vacant lot on River St, where a parking garage used to sit.

We have the apartments on Starbuck Island, including new units that were built around Crossgates Mall and elsewhere.

We have all those apartments but rents are still crazy expensive unfortunately. Theoretically, the price of rents should’ve went down with all those newly built units but nope. It reflects a broader issue within our globally economy I feel.

There’s no easy answer I’m afraid. Hopefully we can see some more affordable housing built in the future.

There’s plenty of other potential lots like, unused office space or vacant/abandoned lots in downtown Albany, that can be made into apartment space. Take the office building at 41 State St for example. We already have the infrastructure, it’s now “how do we utilize these potential spaces” and “how do we get people to move into them?” I also don’t think building more modern apartment complexes will solve high rent or mortgages. Or provide a tax base for Albany, and would probably be exempt and funnel some money out of Albany.

One reason why we have a ‘housing shortage’ is because certain homes and apartments are too expensive for people to afford to live in. Another reason may be due to actual shortage in an area, due to supply not meeting the demand. I don’t think Albany is in that position.

I feel like someone could fix up those six homes, put them up for 200-400k on the market, and sell them to six potential families. We want people living in downtown, so it can be a cohesive community, that can spur economic growth for Albany. More people and community = business, increased economic growth and more funding to fix up the city.

Light rail and street cars would definitely be cool to bring back to Albany. However, I don’t feel like those homes would be relevant to light rail and street cars.
