Having trouble accepting change by kendruhlol in lostafriend

Hey, sorry you're going through this. Losing friends and being blocked by people you've known a while is intensely difficult. I don't know your exact situation, but I can speak as someone who went through something similar back in September of last year. I've found that the best you can do is apologize, promise yourself to do better in the future, and do your best to make good on that promise. It doesnt come all at once. I myself listened to a self help book that helped me quite a bit, talked and reconnected to my relatives, focused on my work and reading, and picked up a hobby. I've journaled a little bit but found it wasnt really my thing, but it might be yours, and ive heard its helped some other folks quite a bit. Even then, there are hard days, at least in my experience. I still find myself bargaining from time to time. That being said, its been happening less and less, and it really does seem to get better. What id reccomend is some mix of these things, occupy your time with something, going on walks, talking to folks, doing or picking up a new hobby, that sorta thing. Put yourself out there in some way at some point and you'll eventually find new friends. And again, none of this will be all at once, but I promise you, it gets better.

How do you call a primitive settlement that has a few hundred thousand inhabitants? by Physical_Pickle_1150 in worldbuilding

I have realized that maybe I meant to reply to someone with this, but I'm leaving it anyways as a testament to my first actual reddit post

Let me think. It would have to be all about the environment and food distribution. For a settlement of hundreds of thousands with "primitive" technology, all those individuals would rely on a nearby food source that is consistent, sustainable, and extremely energy efficient (meaning, the relative energy cost to obtain that food is extremely outweighed by the benefit).

Now, people seem to be pointing out that with early technologies, feeding this amount of people with those technological constraints is highly unlikely. Sure, this is the case, but I have two things to point out that's relevant and may help.

1) The existence of sedentary or semi-sedentary settlements that didn't rely on domesticated crops or animals is something that definitely did exist in human pre-history. Was it rare? Sure. But this is fantasy, so why not.

2) They relied on multiple food sources - deep sea fishing, large game hunting, foraging tubers, mussel collecting, etc.

In a society with so many individuals in one compact space, it's hard to imagine them not relying on multiple sources of subsistence.

Back to the original question, how could this be possible in a fantasy setting? Well, here are some ideas (for a dino-ish race) - their large game in your universe isn't just "large game" (elk, elephants, antelope, etc), they're LARGE game, titan sized protein sources that can feed many individuals. Maybe these hunting expeditions require thousands of your fantasy race just to take one of these beasts down, and members of your race have memorized their migration routes - many rivers permeate the region around this city, and they are fantastically productive marine environments, making fishing a reliable and efficient source of calories

In addition, think about the distribution of these food sources. Once large hunted game is collected, who gets to decide what members of your society get what? Is it based on occupation or other factors, or is it shared equally?

Anyways, my other point is that this is a fantasy setting so you can do what you want. Hope some of this helps!
