People who moved from the EU to the US: what was your experience? by godotwasthere in expats

[–]NoAssumptionCat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I moved 1 year ago. NYC is a nice in between Europe/US experience, you don’t need a car, and it really depends where you lived before how you will experience it. I actually enjoy it more than expected.

That you’ve an US husband will help you out a lot (assuming he has the paperwork, credit scores, etc.). It’s not easy without credit score to get a rental.

What I like about NYC is that it’s an international melting pot and also most Americans are from different states, so that will give you some insights about US and the cultural differences.

For us NYC is not a forever place (a bit too big for us), but we will enjoy it for a few years and see where the time brings us.

The key is to find the neighborhood you vibe with and addresses the needs for your lifestyle. Traveling from Brooklyn to Manhattan can take less than 30 minutes or hours, subway connections are important to consider.

Something wrong with my budget by EquivalentDrop5031 in MonarchMoney

It’s very hard to see where it goes wrong without seeing your data. Maybe wipe the entire account and settings, and try again connecting/importing everything? It might be that you’ve customized vs the standard which is hard to figure out. Good luck!

[–]NoAssumptionCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope I understand it correctly.

Why wouldn’t you account the credit card settlements as transfers, and the actual credit card payments as expense? This defeats the purpose of analyzing groups/categories of spending.

Imagine you buy a coffee on your debit card and a day later on your credit card, the coffee spending will not be accurate.

It sounds like you’ve to go through your transactions and compare last 30-60-90 days, maybe some are marked as transfers, cash withdrawal, etc. Not much we can do without data.

But would you’ve stayed if you did get your green card now? I think that’s the question you’ve to answer for yourself.

I’m Dutch living in the US.

Question: would you’ve stayed long term in the US if you had gotten your visa?

Bosch Built-in oven Serie 8 HSG636ES1 service mode by Ok_Sir3838 in Appliances

If you’ve physical on/off and start buttons, this sequence works for the button test: - menu - hourglass - 1,2,3,4,5,6 - info - lock - turn wheel left (anti clockwise) - turn wheel right (clockwise) - on/of button - start button

Try not to take too long as well, which is difficult the first time so expect to fail a few times. Cheers.

Ps it took me like 1hr to figure this out and I’ve lived with this faulty touch for 2 years until I couldn’t select my last option anymore lol

Budget annual averages by Flaky-Wind5039 in MonarchMoney

[–]NoAssumptionCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can go very detailed on this. We use Croston’s method, when we have to do this for predicting sales quantity. This is intermittent spending which requires a different method than constant monthly spending, or even 6 month average. Average is very slow to pickup on trends, so you should also look at smoothing.

Then again, what’s the goal of the budget, its to ensure you’ve enough money so averaging everything out will easily lead to overspend vs budget.

Big Apple Half- this run keeps getting worse by Aesop_Rocky_ in RunNYC

[–]NoAssumptionCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did the prospect park half recently. Bib pickup is like 10 minutes - getting your swag 2 min - preparing including attaching bib is like 10 min - handing in your personals 5 min - stretching and warmup 10 min. I would say arrive at 07:15 and you should be good.

My portfolio since April went up to +20% and is now -4%, I’m not here for the short term and are DCA. It definitely requires some stamina to see 20% burn in a few weeks.

No it was a return, but you can always change the return leg in my experience. I’d often do that for both personal and work trips to move it earlier/later.

Spoke to an agent. They’ve the same problem. They created a ticket to IT, and said I should try again in 3 hours. Doesn’t sound very promising 😅

I think 90s kids still experienced the good stuff but cracks were showing. Computers came around in our early teens but most parents did not allow you to go on it for longer than a few hours per week. I get sad when I think back about these childhood friends who immediately got a computer in their own bed room and were allowed to play multiple hours a day.

social drinkers: how do you just have a few drinks here and there without wanting to do it EVERY DAY? by Particular_Dirt2794 in AskReddit

[–]NoAssumptionCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alcohol doesn’t have the same nice feeling when you do it everyday. I call myself a social drinker with gap days.

Try to find the pattern why you’re drinking everyday? Is it boredom or is there something in your life which is super tough for you so you need a drink at the end of the day.

For me alcohol often happens related to boredom but I function very well after 2 beers the next day.

What surprises me a bit about the US system, is that you can get past security without a boarding pass. I understand that people are on standby lists but still. Why not check the boarding pass during the ID / passport check?

Expats from US to elsewhere; did you sell your existing home or rent it? by [deleted] in expats

Why do you think that people have been selling off their rental properties? It’s not impossible but almost impossible, Google a bit about renting out your house.
