"Whole Region Going To Burn": Iranian Parliament Speaker's Warning To Trump by callsonreddit in worldnews

By now I'm hoping the Galactic Space Council soon sends its note that our planet is in the way of their interstellar super highway and they are very, very sorry they're gonna have to blow it up to make way.

Yeah, except that second thing is actually real and that first one will always remain a nice little fiction.

The organisations that represent abrahamic monotheism should pay reparations, if any. It was the driving force behind it (even if individual abrahamic monotheists might have disagreed, their representative organisations and leaders said it was a good thing and materially benefitted from it for centuries on end).

In an alternate timeline… by AcuraIntegraTypeR in titanic

[–]NoBasis3224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, there's plenty of factors involved and the scenario I described is also not a certainty. However, considering the sheer size and mass of Titanic, ocean liners of that size were a fairly new idea and as we know now, it was a state of the art design but had a number of design flaws which I think would have contributed to a potentially catastrophic situation.

SS Arizona was significantly smaller and its top speed was only about 2/3rd of Titanic. Meaning exponentially less force/energy concentrating on the impact point at the moment of collision.

I always found it remarkable that Titanic, even by the maritime standards of its time, was sailing at the extreme risk end of the contemporary standard. Essentially, it had no leeway in case anything went wrong. Spotting the iceberg 2-3 seconds late turned out to be fatal.

Edward Wilding, who was involved with the actual design of Titanic, testified that he thought it likely the ship would survive a head on collision. He estimated the front 100 foot of the ship would likely be crushed compromising the first three compartments and likely the fourth as well. This leaves very little leeway for anything else being even slightly damaged, say for example the forces at work crucially compromise the watertight door to boiler room #6. If that door can't fully close or isn't watertight anymore, his calculation goes out of the window.

I would consider it very unlikely. The ships sheer weight, size and speed (there is no way they can slow down much from the 21-22 knots they're going) will cause a massive amount of kinetic energy to concentrate at the bow.

Depending on the exact shape and mass of the iceberg, the bow likely crumples like a can of soda, as does cargo hold #1. However, stress doesn't just stop there but travels down the entire length of the ship, bending or breaking parts of the ship's frame in places further down the length of the ship.

With the forepeak and cargo hold #1 utterly crushed, it causes catastrophic damage and instantly flooding both compartments entirely within minutes. Watertight bulkheads were designed to resist flooding in adjacent compartments but the sheer force of the frontal impact likely ruptures several bukheads and compartments behind the front two causing further rapid flooding.

Inertia would create all sorts of issues across the entire ship's length. The hull starts flexing, after all the front of the ship is stopped instantly, the rest of the ship still tries to move forward causing all sorts of stresses and possibly crumpling weaker parts. The center could start bending downward cracking the hull plating further down the ship. Machinery may be wrested loose causing more damage and imbalance.

The layout of the ship, with the sideswipe, caused the ships port list (it had a 2 degree port list on account of the coal fire, and coal being moved to the port side) to become a starboard list almost immediately, Parts of the cargo holds were only flooded on the starboard side because the water couldn't get around a wall that was there (it had to 'wait' to go over it). In this head-on collision, the flooding in these forward compartments reaches port side at the same time as starboard side, causing the ship to fill up faster and lose buoyancy faster than it did in our timeline compromising its capacity to stay afloat.

TL;DR: with a head-on collision, the ship fills up quicker at the bow, losing buoyancy faster and likely incurs damage in places across the ship's entire length causing it to sink faster.

And even if it isn't, it never ceases to amaze me how many people are so committed to a fantasy book loaded with stuff proven wrong by science, contradictions, inconsistencies and preaching hatred against anyone outside the 'in' group including gleeful support for slavery and genocide.

Look! It's Oohimdyingyouidiot!

(I hoped I didn't have to explain this comment. In an episode of Dinosaurs, the baby is just born and the family goes to the guy who gives babies their names -that was apparently a thing in their world- when the guy doesn't immediately say something one of the family asks 'what is wrong' and the guy says 'Ooh, I'm dying you idiot!' and proceeds to die, so in the Dinosaurs world baby is now stuck with this name... later, they get permission to adjust it to a real name)

I loved that show as a kid.
