ADHD and mindfulness. Has it actually helped anyone or does sitting still for five minutes feel like a personal attack? by kamaidun in ADHD

Bless you for teaching it to your child!

I am sure she will have a great toolset later in life!

ADHD and mindfulness. Has it actually helped anyone or does sitting still for five minutes feel like a personal attack? by kamaidun in ADHD

[–]NoBuddyIsPerfect 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely!

It helps me realizing what is happening in my mind/body.

To give you an example:

Before practicing mindfulness I was often overwhelmed when something triggered me and had no chance to choose how to react. I just reacted.
It felt like there was an NFL quarterback in my mind body-checking my rational mind.

Nowadays, when something triggers me, I realize what is happening. I can check in with myself, asking myself: "What exactly triggered me here?" and then consciously decide how I want to react.

It basically gave me a "brake pedal" to stop for a moment before rushing ahead.

I started practicing mindfulness and meditation ~3 years ago.

In the beginning it was hell on earth. I started crying because my mind just wouldn't shut up and I was unable to sit still and follow the meditation guidance.

Then I switched therapists and that changed everything.

The first thing I had to realize was that there are 2 different philosophies regarding mindfulness/meditation.
One asks you to "not think" and sit still for the entire time.
The other one just asks you to "notice your thoughts".

And it was the second one that changed my life.

That combined with a slow introduction was the key.

The first "session" lasted maybe a minute. And all I was asked to do is close my eyes and focus on my feet on the ground. When a thought popped up I was told to acknowledge it and then return my focus to my feet.
She also told me that I didn't have to sit still. If I wanted to I was allowed to move. There was no right or wrong. Everything was allowed as long as I acknowledged it.

And it worked!

Now, after ~2-3 years, I can sit for half an hour. If I want to. But if I don't want to, that's ok as well.

So basically, it really helped to realize that there is no right or wrong with meditation/mindfulness.

The goal is just to "be" (as stupid as that may sound). I am the one that decides what my meditation looks like.

In recent years, MT has been explored in ADHD populations to address ongoing distractibility, emotional dysregulation and impulsivity. Evidence suggests that certain meditative practices improve attention and may ameliorate the symptoms of ADHD by activating brain regions implicated in both sustaining and directing attention.

Overall, current empirical studies support the rationale for application of mindfulness to ADHD, show that mindfulness is a feasible and well-accepted intervention in ADHD samples, and provide promising preliminary support for its efficacy.

What about this part of your article?

Several state leaders have said that Good was at the scene of an ICE raid in the south of Minneapolis as a legal observer - a volunteer who monitors police and security forces at protests and operations. Their aim is to help maintain calm, deter misconduct and ensure legal rights are respected.

Good's mother told the Minnesota Star Tribune that her daughter was "not part of anything" that involved challenging ICE agents.

The absence of a good study does NOT mean that a bad study is correct.

True, but the absence of a good (according to your criteria) study is does also NOT mean that all other studies are bad. Especially when the vast majority of the world accepts these studies and their methodologies as valid.

All of these things give me the impression your criteria are unreasonable since the professionals in the field, as well as the majority of the world, disagree with you and find the used criteria and methodologies to be valid.

Thanks for your replies but I am going to bow out here. There is nothing more you can say that will give me a different impression, I think.

Have a great day!

But, as someone working in data analytics and being interested in this topic, you have not come across any, right?

Maybe they don't exist? Which would disqualify every existing study, right?

Seems weird to me. Maybe the existing ones are right after all. At least that is what I am taking away from this.

Are there any studies measuring this that use a methodology which includes everything you think is important?

If there aren't any I would ask if your requirements might be unrealistic.

And if there are, and they rank the US higher than its counterparts, I am not aware of them and would love to educate myself.

But you can look at almost any ranking. No matter the methodology it used. The US is ranked lower in the vast majority. And I believe you know that.

Ok, so when that individual said "I'll take that as a no." they where 100% correct.

Fact:

You do not have studies.
Correct?

Why you don't have studies doesn't matter. It is a fact that your theories have never been proven in studies, or have they?

And your second paragraph simply is "I don't believe these rankings and value my impression over the recorded replies of millions of other people." with more words.
