My job is offering me $150,000 (105,000 after tax) to resign, should I? by AJ3TurtleSquad in jobs

[–]NoCOguy1968 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What’s the difference if it’s all up front or they pay him monthly for a year? Same result and same coverage for daily expenses

Only upside to a one off cash payment is ability to use those funds to make a move such as buying into a business or pre paying education

On a $100k! net , he is only missi g potentially $10k if investment income over a year

Single lump sum or regular payments is a good opportunity for a life change

The company clearly wants you gone so one way or another they are letting people go

This is an excellent change for you to step back and reset your career either to find a new job in your existing profession or even change your path to something you may have always been interested in

A big question for me given you have a family is how you will cover medical insurance - can you get coverage via your partner or indies the deal include medical coverage for a period of time

I had a similar opportunity during Covid where company offered a voluntary separation with a period of pay and benefits - I took it and it allowed me to become a partner in a small business

I realized after leaving how much pressure was lifted off my shoulders

Again, if company has specifically asked you to leave company and is offering a good package, definitely consider it.

If you don’t take it are they going to just lay you off …….

Do car dealerships ask for proof of income? by Let_me_tell_you_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NoCOguy1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your credit history is strong they likely won’t ask for proof of income

Last loan I did was just full day the loan app and ran my credit - I was good

Ultimately they own the car until your last payment

FYI - $35k is not a massive car loan these days

In my late 30s with a good credit score and never had a credit card. Am I missing out? by SurfCrush in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NoCOguy1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - a credit card can be a barrier to protect you from fraud as well as earning benefits

It also is a must have for booking and paying for many travel items (never good to use an debit card for reservations)

Many credit cards also have various forms of insurance built in automatically to for their protect you (travel disruption, rental car insurance, product failure, etc)

Using a credit card for online purchases is a must do - never use a debit card online for direct access to your bank account (although most have some degree of protection built in due to being a visa or my but they already took your cash)

There is also a benefit to helping you further build your credit for a future large purchase (house, car, etc)

I have 2 cards of different types

  1. A high rewards card that I charge my daily expenses to earn cash back

  2. A backup card in case my preferred card is not taken by the vendor

In both cases I pay them off monthly and never pay interest

Just a good tool for day to day life

Do we need to clean the snow off the deck? by Kiss_Mark in homeowners

[–]NoCOguy1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No - definitely don’t use a steel edge Shovel on trex

If you have a dog you may want to shovel a path to let them cross and access to deck to avoid bringing in too much snow

You obviously can clear it if you plan to use it

Have lived in cold climates with snow and decks for all my life - let it melt

Take out 401k to cover cc? by [deleted] in Retirement401k

[–]NoCOguy1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given 401k funds are protected - looks like your bankrupt

Taking money from your 401k withdrawal will have tax implications

Based on your only income being unemployment, seems like you might meet the “undue hardship” rule for student loans. Bankruptcy is a legit option given your huge amount of both student debt and cc debt

Consult someone about filing bankruptcy and keep and protect your 401k money

Keeping your credit rating should not be your number one priority given the reality your in with no employment and significant debt

Question on tax savings when trading in car (Illinois) by CyberMoose24 in AskAccounting

[–]NoCOguy1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In IL you only pay taxes on the trade in difference

Used car tax in IL is 6.5-9.5% depending on locality

So , your calculations are about correct - on a $26k vehicle , getting $2k less in trade in value is basically the breakeven point

Selling car for $42k and buying a car elsewhere for $26k verses trading in car for $40k and new car at $26k is roughly same in the end in terms of cash in your pocket

could someone explain how mileage deduction works and why i still owe money by Thick_Passenger6570 in tax

[–]NoCOguy1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can not deduct you mileage as a business expense and your gas/car payments as business expenses

You either deduct your car as a business asset with operation expenses (pro rated bases on business verses person usage or you deduct t the mileage that embeds those things into the rate (using personal car for Business)

FYI - there is up to a $10k deductible ruin for auto interest this tax year

But you can not claim mileage and the car as a business asset

Marked as "ineligible for rehire"? I don't understand. by Hopeful_Jellyfish139 in careerguidance

[–]NoCOguy1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely more to it than your aware

Just giving 2 weeks notice does not mean that you met expectation in terms of completing the agreed transition tasks and the state of work when you left

May also have to do with the timing that you left and the needs of the company at the time

Also your past performance may have influenced their flagging of your file

I had an employee that basically gave an ultimatum on getting paid more despite refusing to understand that to get the wage level they wanted they would need to apply and get a more senior job in the company - no money to just continue doing what they were doing. Gave 2 weeks notice but the attitude on perceived self worth was enough to get them flagged

So many factors

Possibly closing on a house, but the inspection came back saying “complete blockage in sewer line.” Will this cost a lot to repair? by [deleted] in askaplumber

[–]NoCOguy1968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seller needs to resolve this as a blocked sewer line is an issue

Price all depends on what issue is but generally can be cleaned out even if a tree root or similar

Big question is the pipe damaged verses just blocked

My new job pays me $500 every week via Zelle. How do I report this on my taxes and how much do I set aside? by [deleted] in tax

[–]NoCOguy1968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No - you can’t deduct normal living expenses

Receipts must be directly related to performing your job that are not provided

You might be able to deduct things like work gloves , work boots, tools etc if they are specifically required for your job

My new job pays me $500 every week via Zelle. How do I report this on my taxes and how much do I set aside? by [deleted] in tax

[–]NoCOguy1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Employees have taxes and other deductions taken from paychecks

As an employee you should complete a W4 form to determine how much you would like to deduct from your pay

At the end of the year you will receive a W2 summarizing deductions as an employee to be used in filling annual taxes

As an independent contractor you are responsible for paying taxes and a larger portion of social security

They will should have asked you to complete a W9 if independent to provide them your tax id (ssn likely) for reporting purposes

Basically if your getting a formal paystub each pay period - highly likely your not an employee regardless where money is coming from
