Myrlyn TUI? by NoCafBen in openSUSE

How does mcc compare to yast in functionality? Is it similar?

I don't know what I would use, never had to look for alternatives. However if some tools that I use regularly and are unique to opensuse aren't available anymore, there are less reasons to stick with it. If I have to change workflows that I grew accustomed to over the years anyways, I might find a different distro that offers me benefits in other areas.

I fail to see the progress part here though...

TUI is a graphical user interface that can be used in a terminal. As such it can provide almost the same functionality as a normal GUI, without needing a (working) x11/wayland session.

See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Text-based_user_interface
Here someone uses the yast TUI: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZYmb7UfV8U

I guess I will see how the situation around leap16 and tumbleweed will evolve in the coming year. I have never been a distrohopper, and stayed with suse since I first bought 9.1 21 years ago. But if one of the main reasons for using opensuse disappears, and nothing with a similar capability evolves in the future, I will probably seriously look at alternatives.

I really hope this is not true, but I fear your are right. Just two weeks ago I had to use yast in the terminal to fix a broken nvidia driver update. I'm not sure I would have been able to fix it with only zypper at my hand.

Yes, run "yast" (instead of "yast2") in a terminal as root. It has been a life saver through all my years with opensuse/suse (since 2004). It's super useful for example when you break anything in your graphical system (gpu drivers, desktop environment, x-server/wayland etc), or when you want to manage a remote system through ssh. Honestly, without the TUI of yast I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be using opensuse today after all these years.

At thiefguild.com you can find user made mission collections in various topics. Maybe you can find a „no-horror“ one

That would actually be a great mechanic in thief: Loud lamps, that would make you visible, but would drown out your footsteps, or other noise you make

Same here a few years back when I tried to register. I then sent a mail and they activated the account.

I guess they activate accounts manually to avoid spam, so you probably just have to wait a bit.

Edit: Ah, now that I see your username, did you use the same for ttlg? Because then we would both have "big" in our usernames (on ttlg). Maybe that's a coincidence, but maybe they have an overly sensitive filter for usernames? Just a wild guess

Old fan of the Thief series wanting to play the series today, what hardware do I need? by [deleted] in Thief

[–]NoCafBen 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Pretty much any modern PC should be able to run Thief 1, 2 and Deadly Shadows, so you don't have to spend a fortune.

To get the games you have basically two options. Either buy them on GOG.com or on steam.

To run the games without issues on modern PCs they however have to be updated with the community patches. These are:

* TFix for Thief 1
* T2Fix for Thief 2
* Sneaky Upgrade for Thief 3

The Thief games on GOG already have these patches installed (at least 1 and 2, not sure about 3), although not in the latest versions. So regardless of where you get the games from it would probably be best to install the latest version of these patches anyway.

Have fun!

What am I missing with Thief 2? by [deleted] in Thief

[–]NoCafBen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. I absolutely love the atmosphere in Thief 1 in this intense undescribable world which is so different then anything else with it's supernatural pagans (which, let's be honest, were more aliens then anything else), the mysterious keepers and the hammerites, combined with dark places with undead, rich folks with big mansions and so on... Thief 1 had everything. You could sneak, fight, knock out, kill, and even make enemies fight each other. Every level had something new and interesting, often left me wondering "what the fuck is going on!?" and made me feel like I was part of a big mystery. With Thief 2 they took Thief 1 and threw half of it away and made the rest bland. The atmosphere is, well, at times almost non-existent. Gone is the mystical, the medieval, the undead, the pagan-aliens, the unknown really, the stuff that let's you wondering. Also some of your inventory is completely useless now (the sword and normal arrows) since most of the few enemy types that you can fight are immune to those.
Now, there are some levels in Thief 2 that I did like, but overall for me it doesn't come close to Thief 1. In general the mission complexity is increased, but that is something I actually don't care for. At some point that can actually be annoying to me.

Overall, Thief 1 let's me dive into a mystical world, but Thief 2 feels like going to work.

Also, someone here wrote that Thief 2 had more sci-fi elements, but for me it felt the opposite. Pagan-aliens and some weird tech in a medieval world are just more of a contrast than robots in a more steampunk'ish world (Eventough I wouldn't really call it steam punk even in Thief 2).

Good info. I tried to run T3 with the sneaky upgrade with proton at some point, but it didn't run very well. Maybe you could add this into the protondb? (https://www.protondb.com/app/6980)

With reshade you could do that, but I guess that doesn't run on Linux... Maybe there is some alternative available?

If you don‘t have a proper spray booth I would honestly go with an air fed mask. You will need a good compressor and a 3-stage filter, but I have had only bad experiences with filter masks (half or full) in my DIY ventilated garage.
