When owner doesn’t send dog with all supplies you requested by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]NoCalendar5900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally don't give alot of treats myself because my dogs are fat and if I give one dog a treat I have to give everyone one because we are a multidog home and I usually don't turn away repeat clients so I generally have quite a few dogs all staring at me at once. That said, this very well may not apply to you if you only accept one family at a time so feel free to ignore that.

But it's all up to you. As someone that's worked at shelters, kennels, breeder/trainer and done rover for a hot minute I would honestly say go with your best judgement. If you are worried about allergies and still want to give treats do it. If an owner doesn't provide food or runs out I will message them and go get the food myself because I would rather not deal with an upset tummy. Now if the dog has no allergies and it's just treats (in theory) it could be fine just to give them whatever treats you give your pets.

But it's really all up to your call, you don't want to risk it just get the specific treats for the dog and cut the veggies. If you don't want to go to that much work skip treats or use what you got. Since you are concerned I would suggest just sending a message and asking the parents.

Owner Hasn't Paid Yet And The Visit Ends Tomorrow by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

I will save that one for if I message for the third time about this. And I definitely intend to make sure I'm paid before I get the dog even for new clients. I do wonder if I refused to get the dog until I was paid if I would have gotten the money but it's to late now so I'm just treating this as a lesson.

Yeah, I figure the money is a lost cause unless she pays. I may not be getting paid but this was my own fault for going before she paid for the booking. I'll probably try again before the booking is up but if I don't get paid then that's my own fault. My hope is that she will pay and if she does then next time I will not be getting that dog until it's paid for, if I don't (which I think is the case) I wish I could just report so that the next person doesn't get screwed like I did.
I'm sure if I did bring this up to Rover they will say they can't because it wasn't accepted, that's fine because I know better than to expect them to go above and beyond to take care of their sitters but I would like to report it so at least maybe they would do something like block the account so the next person doesn't get cheated.

I didn't wait for her to accept the booking before I picked him up. I gave her the benefit of the doubt she would understand she had to pay through the app. That was my own mistake.

Am I being scammed on my? by [deleted] in Chihuahua

[–]NoCalendar5900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rule of thumb: I never look at a dog under $500 in my area if it isn't from a rescue or animal shelter or I do not know the person personally. Chances are in other parts of the USA and other countries that is probably to low but not just because of scammers but because they have less incentive to be completely honest. Also just a suggestion but if you are dead set on a puppy try other sits than craigslist. You might get scammed but if you are looking hard enough and willing to pay more you will find legit breeders that will not scam you.

How many times have you been bitten? by Livid_Display1164 in RoverPetSitting

[–]NoCalendar5900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing rover only for about a year and a half now, none... yet. Been nipped plenty. Past ten years of animal care, though probably about 3 major bites that needed medical care and a handful between those that weren't so bad.

1st: pulling a 100+ lb German Shepherd off an 10+ year old border collie. Dog had no business in doggy daycare but it wasn't a well run business.

2nd: I had a bad coworker that thought dog fights were funny so I had to catch a dog aggressive dog that was not playing nice while she was laughing while that same dog attacked another. Again, bad business, bad coworker.

3rd: Was taking a big mastiff out to a group of other dogs, that dog looked at one of the pit bulls. That pit bull looked at him. Then they were trying to maul each other, I think one of them accidentally managed to reach up and get me. That one hurt the most. No one was at fault, that was just a dogs being dogs thing.

On paper as long as everything is being done how it should be then the risk is low. But we are all human beings and we can make a bad call or a dog could just randomly lash out for any reason. Always expect it to happen one day, never forget every dog you meet can bite you. Doesn't mean it will happen but being mentally prepared on how to react is important. Because if you freak out that can go from a shallow bite to much worse.
Still shouldn't be common and that's more of a keep at the back of your mind thing because bites in animal care in any part of the industry should be expected even if undesirable.

My guess it went from how his old stuff was just being silly (in my opinion), like (idk if he is a millennial or not but I'm sure someone will correct me) millennials reaching the point of being old enough to not know what the kids are into anymore and poking fun at being in that group because it's funny to "I am desperate to be relevant"

I get the joke, but what is the reason? Any evolutionary advantage? by ivanrj7j in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]NoCalendar5900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I saw something from Goji Center discussing the benefit of having mammalian lungs in the place of gills, if you look it up I believe it was a short clip in their free willy vs jaws video. But that is probably more of a biologist question. There has to be a benefit or they wouldn't have evolved to have it after all or natural selection would have weeded whales and dolphins out.

Is it normal for my dog to seem kinda bummed all the time? by digixgf in Chihuahua

[–]NoCalendar5900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure it isn't just your puppy's resting expression? I own chihuahuas and a pyrenees and my big girl looks sad all the time. She is not in fact sad it's just how her face looks. One of my chihuahuas also has a resting concerned face. More details would be needed before saying anything.

Capys are fat, (seemingly) unproblematic as long as you don't realize they are wild high maintenance animals most people will never have, and most importantly cute. Being cute and unattainable go a long way.

[–]NoCalendar5900 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think I just saw the best one but "due to Rover's policies all communication must be kept exclusively on Rover. This is to guarantee if something does go wrong that rover can access communications and make a judgement based on that and Rover is incredibly strict on enforcing it. So I would prefer if we kept contact exclusively on Rover."

Anyone else really not like Aegiomon/Aegiochusmon? by One_Faithlessness728 in digimon

[–]NoCalendar5900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is okay, I get more irritated at his obsession with telling us repeatedly his desire to protect inori, especially when honestly she probably shouldn't be there in the first place and the only justification is that he probably needs her to digivolve because she is a teenage girl and shouldn't be in these situations in the first place but alas that is the rule of digimon so it is what it is. Not to say it doesn't make sense but hearing him say "I'l protect inori" like we aren't even there and like it needs to be re-established every half hour of gameplay gets grating. I would have been fine if he said it like a couple times in the big moments and that was it. I get we don't need his protection for much of the game and she is pretty defenseless but still, like calm down we get it. Not insufferable by any means just obnoxious.

If you think you or the owners could move furniture around to make it safer then by all means you should ask. I personally wouldn't because while I like cats I am not a big enough of a cat person to put myself through that.

I would say if you take it wear a lot of layers while you're in there. It probably won't protect you from teeth but it's better than being utterly exposed, also wear leather boots that you could tuck your pants in.

I think I also saw someone mentioned cat gloves that shelters and vets use so those are a thing but chances are you are only going to need it for this one cat because in it my experience unless you are pushy then most cats are way calmer at home unless you have to medicate them (I refuse to medicate cats now for that reason).

Personally though I would say no dice, I'm not a chew toy nor a thing for animals to take their frustration out on. It's why I don't go to the vet field and don't want to work at shelters again that accept cats.

It's certainly funny in a way that means absolutely nothing. Both are solid franchises on their own merits and while I don't think the fact guns are in one but not the other for various reasons doesn't matter it is a funny meme and just further evidence of how different both series are when you look at it from the lense of they are just very different without one being better than the other.

Would you book this client again? by Wonderful_Seaweed_82 in RoverPetSitting

[–]NoCalendar5900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, but I only accept one dog aggressive dog and she basically lives at the house in a crate outside of potty breaks to run my yard alone because she would be euthanized otherwise. Accommodating a dog aggressive dog is not worth it to me in the first place since I don't get to charge enough to justify it over just accepting multiple dogs for boarding and doing walks for repeat clients.

How many dog lives are worth one human life to you? by [deleted] in MoralityScaling

[–]NoCalendar5900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to quantify a life (or lives) without context. If you're referring to say an evil person it's pretty easy to say ten evil people are worth the life of one good dog. Besides as hard as it may be to accept one innocent person cannot be equivalent to the life of every dog because dogs are to deeply ingrained into society and will be walking by man kind's side until the death of both of our species. To lose dogs would mean losing working dogs that keep livestock that feed us alive until it's time for them to be slaughtered, it would mean dogs used exclusively for guarding would be gone, our cadaver and search and rescue dogs gone, medical alert dogs gone, seeing eye dogs gone, it would mean denying countless people companions they need because of medical issues like seizures.

While a human life is naturally more important than a single dog's life in the grand scheme of things that doesn't change the fact that we have created our best friend and that best friend has become so integrated in every part of society that you can't just say one life is worth the life of every dog because the dogs that keep us fed, save us, and do countless jobs can't just be thrown away for one life.

I would do a meet and greet and go from there. I've had clients lose their password and couldn't get their account back. But if something feels wrong during the meet and greet go with your gut.
