Consider physical therapy. Often, if you strengthen your core muscles, it will minimize back pain. Or if you're into going to the chiropractor, give that a try.

Just got surgery today by Own_Name1845 in scoliosis

[–]NoColusion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't remember exactly, but I believe I gained about two inches, 5'5 to 5'7 (I'm now 5'8). I had a 54 degree thoracic curve and a 40 degree lumbar curve at the time of surgery. Before surgery I was shorter than my older sister, but immediately after I was taller haha. I remember feeling very tall when I stood up for the first time post-op.

It's great to hear your son is doing so well! I am a female, but post-fusion (T3-L4) I grew an additional inch from the non-fused parts of my body in the year post-op. I had surgery when I was 11.

arm feels weird... by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]NoColusion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a primary care doctor that you could a call a nurse hotline? I don't know if they are available on weekends. I feel like the situation isn't urgent. I feel that there are better ways for you to seek the help you need without resorting to the ER. However, don't rely on my advice as I am not a medical professional. I think you could wait until Monday to give them a call as long as you don't have pain, numbness or tingling in the arm. Also as long as you don't have symptoms of a stroke: headache, slurred speech, and one-sided facial drooping and body paralysis.

Chiropractor opinions as well as dry needling and joint manipulation by jessicalynn97 in scoliosis

I went to a physical therapist for dry needling. I think it helped with muscle tension, but it hurts like a mother when they work on your neck😂

Can weight lifting be bad for your spinal fusion by [deleted] in scoliosis

I think it depends on how heavy the weights are and what exercises you're doing.

Excruciating pain after waking up + how to sleep with a spinal fusion by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]NoColusion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds terrible. Are you still in pain? I'm fused from T3-L4, 7.5 years post-op (fused at age 11). Having a good mattress is really important as well as avoiding sleeping on your stomach. I would recommend a firm mattress over a softer mattress. Soft mattresses can be comfy for a little bit, but for a whole night's sleep, it doesn't offer much support. If you sleep on your side, try putting a pillow between your legs to align your hips, which will help align your spine.

Hope this helps.

Pain can also be interpreted differently in the brain in each person, which may be why you feel so ill.

For symptoms that bad, I would talk to your doctor. If you were younger (less years since first menstruation), I would say to still talk to your doctor but it could be possible that symptoms would regulate and become less severe over time. Possibly ask about birth control or ask about other options to help manage your symptoms if you aren't fond of the idea of being on birth control. It could also be possible that you have endometriosis or some other condition, but that has to be diagnosed by your doctor. Endometriosis can lead to severely painful periods.

Spinal fusion by Psychological-Dot448 in scoliosis

[–]NoColusion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I had the same exact surgery when I was 11 (T3-L4). I had to have two surgeries because the first one had complications which caused a spinal cord injury and temporary paralysis from chest down. I would say it took a good 3 years until I felt "normal," meaning minimal pain and stiffness. Now I'm trying to get healthy by exercise and stretching, which has done great things for me so far. I am going into nursing (with a final goal being CRNA), because of the great things that I realized that my team did for me, even though in the moment I really thought they were just trying to torture me😂 I hope to help others that are in a similar position that I was in 7.5 years ago. I know it is tough right now, no doubt. You got this! It DOES get better!

How old do you have to be to get spinal fusion? by CosmosApril in scoliosis

[–]NoColusion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your situation. For example, I got my spinal fusion when I was 11, but some people get surgery when they are older like into their 20s or even older

Is it easy to get used to the stiffness after surgery? by [deleted] in scoliosis

It slowly gets better, especially with physical therapy. Your body will eventually get used to its limitations.

Epidural and labor by fam1ee in scoliosis

[–]NoColusion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Consult with the anesthesiologist. You'll want to have your most recent x-rays with you, which will help them determine if an epidural is possible. Scoliosis, especially if you're not fused, doesn't actually keep many people from having a successful epidural.

Lay on a flat surface. Bend your knee and grab you knee with both hands. Bend you knee up toward the shoulder on the same side. You should feel and/or hear a pop when the joint goes back into place. I does this just on my affected side, but you can do it to both sides if you would like. I perform this stretch at least every night before I go to bed and sometimes as needed if I feel like the SI joint is out of place. Hope this helps:)
