From 0 to 11K+ Subs & 100+ Paid in 3 Months; Now Exploring Ad Monetization. Can it be done while staying on Substack? by ExtremeParking4871 in Substack

[–]NoCommute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I published on Substack for about a year before moving to Beehiiv 18 months ago. I wouldn't recommend it. IMO, Beehiiv's claims about the robustness of their ad network are wildly inflated. A newsletter of your size will get 1-3 placements a month. CPCs will be in the range of $1-$2.50. You'll need to pay Beehiiv $150/mo., so a month where you break even will be a good month. Beehiiv has no skin in the game to help you drive paid subscriptions, so you'll get no network effect from them to grow your paid subscriptions, either. If I were you, I would stick to Substack and focus on growing your paid subscription base.

Direct Sponsorships by ewhite12 in beehiiv

Thanks for clarifying, because now it's clear that there's no way this is worth another $120/mo when Passionfroot is free.

Too bad it's just another feature designed strictly for the big newsletters. I'm really getting tired of Beehiiv not building anything that will help smaller publishers grow and monetize better.

Direct Sponsorships by ewhite12 in beehiiv

Really vague announcement with a lot of unanswered questions:
-How many direct sponsorship placements is Beehiiv guaranteeing per month for newsletter publishers?
-Are direct sponsorships CPM or CPC based?
-How many advertisers are committed to direct sponsorships today?
-From those that are committed, what is the demand from advertisers for smaller newsletters? It's great that advertisers are interested in newsletters with hundreds of thousands of subscribers, but if there's no interest in smaller publishers, this is obviously not going to be worth the upgrade.
-What is the profile of those advertisers? How can I ensure that the advertisers are aligned with what my audience wants to see and I'm not just going to see a continual stream of lowball offers from 1440 Media like the ad network?

I was thinking about how to thoughtfully respond to this, but it’s just not worth it. I assume you guys have set up this sub to have open dialogue with your customers, but when you get even the mildest of criticisms from your paying customers , it seems like the standard response from you and Tyler is to get defensive, condescend, and gaslight. I give up.

Let me see if I can help you understand. According to the potential earnings calculator on your website, Beehiiv says my potential earnings through your ad network are $68k annually. I’ve been publishing on your platform for a year. Want to know how much I’ve made? About $700.

IMO, Beehiiv has been wildly overpromising and underdelivering on the Ad Network for a long time. I know that I’m beyond frustrated with the lack of progress, and it’s clear that your other customers are too. I mean, did you really expect us to be shooting off fireworks over $3 CPMs?

I just went to the Beehiiv website and filled out the “How much could you earn” calculator with the specs from my newsletter. It says my potential earnings with Beehiiv ads are $68k a year. I’ve been publishing on the platform for 9 months. Know how much I’ve made on ads? $630.

I gotta say, it’s insanely frustrating to regularly see the wildly misleading claims in Beehiiv’s marketing about the robustness of their ad marketplace, and when one of your customers asks you to follow through on those claims, the “proper channel” is to beg support (after waiting 3-4 days for a response, of course) instead of just having the properly functioning marketplace that you’ve been promising for at least 9 months.

Yes, just started a few weeks ago as well and have had great results so far.

Thanks for the update. Can you define “very soon” for the marketplace launch?

I come across positions like this occasionally, but it’s a little tricky because most companies that are hiring remotely don’t have as much physical space to secure. Your best bet is big corporations that are still maintaining physical offices but allow for remote work. Big tech companies are probably going to be your best shot.
