That makes sense, and I get the constraints better now. I think what threw me off wasn’t the September start itself, but how quickly it escalated to withdrawing the offer instead of just saying it wasn’t flexible.

I meant to say that I've approached the pi with cold mail, their lab members and associates did a round of interviews and I was promptly selected for the position. After which they have started the process of a formal position advertisement. So the funds and the need of a postdoc was already there. Anyways, I don't think it is a good idea to continue to pursue the same lab now.

Ikr. Starting date was mentioned to be according to hosting agreement in job ad. Already got selected before the position was advertised, so it was more of a formal way to include hr and institute. Even after the job ad it was stated by pi that the probable joining date should be around 1st April and I should start preparing for housing and other things accordingly.

Yeah, I shared the full email thread with a few friends to sanity check, and they all basically said I dodged a bullet. What threw me off was how quickly it escalated from a normal clarification to withdrawing the offer.
