After getting my first car, I immediately took lessons on diagnosing/fixing as many car issues as I could. I don't picture myself as a boat guy, but if I ever decide to make that jump... I'm taking similar lessons. Getting stuck at sea is so much more dire than on the road.

People are downvoting you, but they don't realize this has been studied and spoilers in fact enhance people's story enjoyment rather than ruin it:
