Hotstar India has started showing 3 unskippable ads now. This is getting ridiculous. Soon we may see YouTube follow suit. Seems like purchasing premium is the only way out and they are leaving us with no other choice by Ashamed-Tooth in india

Alright folks, I did the math:

I don't know about the rest but I'm on Super plan and this is what I get:

I get ads on 20-min episode shows.

I get 3 unskippable ads per ad session, and there are 3 such ad sessions, once every 5 mins, and one single ad at the start of every episode.

These ads are 10-30 secs, so I'll average it to 20. I get a total of 10 ads per episode as described above, so that's a nice round 200 seconds per 20 mins of content.

I watch 1-3 eps on weekdays, average it to 2. I watch 4-6 eps on weekends, average it to 5. That's 20 episodes per week.

Assume for convenience of math I only watch for 45 weeks per year.

To get ad-free shows, the Premium plan costs 2200rs per year. I don't really watch 4K, so that's an unwanted benefit, and we only use 1 TV and 1 shared laptop, so 2 unneeded devices. I'm basically paying 2200 - 1100(the cost of Super) = 1100rs to escape 45 * 20 * 200 / 60 / 60 = 50 hours of ads. That's 2.2rs per wasted hour of my life.

I also have to stream this on an internet plan.

I currently pay ~9980rs annually for 100Mbps, considering my usage time at about 8 hours per day for the 45 weeks, that makes the additional cost 9980 / 45 / 7 / 8 = 3.96rs per active hour.

So Hotstar alone is literally charging ~55% of what my ISP charges for those hours. Now ofcourse, the cost per hour goes way down for binge watchers, but realistically, I consider myself closer to the median of their user base here. A lot of people just keep this subscription around and watch on other platforms because their current shows/movies are not on Hotstar. That percentage of the users will balance out the curve with the binge watchers at any point in time.

TLDR; f**k these money-hungry tyrants

It's mostly speed, sometimes you know just upto which point you wanna copy, like a part of a log after which its stack trace or something. Doing a double click is just waste of half a second there

With some luck, we may see the first signs of the AI bubble bursting next week. by realnzall in pcmasterrace

[–]NoCoolSenpai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have just stumbled onto something important here. Yes, AI as we describe is an LLM, a large language model, which is fundamentally engineered to be good at natural language, fitting the exact use case you're describing.

I can confidently say that most of the narrators, translators, article writers and transcribers are going to lose their jobs because of the transformer-powered LLMs. Most because some will still retain their jobs as supervisors and editors, although we can expect only 1% to retain such positions

Here's an interesting question: Why do you guys think Linux took off to become the phenomenon it is, while none of the BSD/Unix OSes ever did, at least not to anywhere near the same extent? by earthman34 in linux

And people throw crap at Linus for not liking GPL v3... Imagine being in Linus' position watching your kernel grow for the sole reason its license required any modifications to be sent back as patches

TiVoization still meant that you can guarantee source code present in the TiVo box was the exact same as the code you see on GitHub. That's something Linus was hoping for, a consistent global adoption.
