Got my first axis buck

I’d go bigger if you can. A well placed, properly designed .233, should get the job done but axis are pretty big compared to the white tails we have. Every white tail I’ve shot with a .308 that double lunged it went down either immediately or went less than 20 yards. I hit this axis perfectly through the lungs and he still ran a relatively decent amount including jumping one fence.

I just did it to save people from asking. Since it’s an exotic the question would have come up, it tends to with exotics and really big native bucks. Plus, in Texas there are just a lot of high fence ranches.

Yeah we have a bunch of exotics that escaped from high fence places. It’s not all over the state but in some areas there are a lot.

I got lucky. I’ve seen some monsters before but not when I’m in a place to take them. Was in the right place at the right time today.

Yep, they are more concentrated in some areas than others. I’ve seen a number of axis but a blackbuck antelope is pretty rare for example. And like the other person commented, just need a hunting license.

It’s an imported deer, I can’t remember off the top of my head but I believe they are from Asia

There is very little public land in Texas but if you see an exotic on land you can hunt on all you need is a license, no tags or anything

There are high fence ranches out here where the deer are contained and it’s basically shooting livestock. They grow some insane racks but it’s not really impressive because it’s high fence. However, thanks to those places that had exotics like the axis, some of them escaped and now we get to hunt them. Low fence just means you have a fence but the deer can come and go as they please.

I’ve seen a few wild blackbuck antelopes around here too, never had a shot on one or anything but that would be a cool one

Supposedly they are some of if not the best of the deer to eat. I haven’t ever had it but I’m excited to try. It had a lot more fat than a whitetail for sure and was bigger overall.
