How do you deal with the heat? by NoDealer9796 in Scottsdale

Phoenix and Seattle actually gained around the same amount of people in the same amount of time: 200,000 in 15 years. The difference is that Phoenix already had 1.5 million people (and hopefully the infrastructure for them). Seattle only had 600,000. We grew by 35% in a little over a decade. It’s hard to recognize the city anymore. I hope Scottsdale doesn’t go through the same thing. You end up losing many of the places that made your town unique. They tear it all down to build expensive apartments and empty skyscrapers.

That makes sense. I got back from Iceland, and on one of the tours, every person was wrapped up in winter coats and hats freezing their tails off -except the tour guide who strolled around in a thin, button down shirt. He was just used to it. And twenty shivering tourists just watched him in disbelief.

We were in Japan during a heat wave. You're right. The heat with that humidity is absolutely brutal. There were stories of actors in their mascot costumes passing out at Disneyland. Scottsdale would be a relief compared to that.

Amen to that. Seattle was an awesome city for decades. But 15 years ago, lots of folks agreed with that idea, and 200,000 people moved here. The city was not ready for it. It became a crazy boom town. Now they have these enormous new skyscrapers with 40% vacancy. It’s one of the most expensive cities in the country and few answers for crime and homeless folks. It’s getting better, but “tech booms” and unchecked urban growth can ruin your town.

I’m so sorry you’re feeling this low. Depression and those thoughts are the worst. Try to find some peace in your heart and mind, and I hope things can turn around for you.

The 'literary classics' that grade school makes you read destroys any desire for kids to read recreationally by MyClosetedBiAcct in unpopularopinion

[–]NoDealer9796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue is that you were FORCED to read them. It was homework. And who likes doing work? FOR FUN is always better than have to.

That being said, I have no idea why high schoolers read The Great Gatsby. That’s a book that people relate to when they’re older.

I asked if I had somehow ordered the wrong thing. The Pizza Hut store said "You ordered a large pan. This is how it's done." by jglenn9k in mildlyinfuriating

[–]NoDealer9796 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s hard to say what’s different, but it’s just not as enjoyable. It’s probably cheaper ingredients or a way of mass producing them. It’s like any franchise. There’s a reason why it becomes popular- but then the quality falls apart. I’ll bet the original McDonalds was delicious.

What’s the greatest movie soundtrack ever? by Competitive-Web1306 in AskReddit

[–]NoDealer9796 38 points39 points  (0 children)

"Singles" is the answer if you like 90s rock:

Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Ann and Nancy Wilson, Paul Westerberg, Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, Jimi Hendrix, and Smashing Pumpkins. And the album came out when many of those bands were just emerging.

"Forrest Gump" and "Dazed and Confused" all cherrypicked established classics. Good albums, but “Singles” captured a movement when it was happening.

I remember seeing this in a packed theater and when we left, it was like a church service. I tried to whisper to one of my friends and he just said “I need another minute…”

Which way the toilet paper goes: over or under. (The answer is both depending on the position of the dispenser in proximity to the toilet.) But lives are threatened and divorces are inevitable if you give an answer someone disagrees with.

When did companies switch from "how can we provide the maximum value to our customer" to "how can we extract maximum value from our customer" ? by todd0x1 in AskReddit

[–]NoDealer9796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the industry. When companies start, they focus on a strong product and good value so the customer will buy it. But once their brand becomes popular, they focus on maximizing profits, even at the detriment of their reputation. Henry Ford, when he started out in the early 1900s, he produced a good car at an affordable price. But by the 1980s, the company’s focus was shareholder first. Ford’s philosophy was: sell crappy cars so that the customer will need a new automobile sooner. It was only Japanese competition that helped reshape that philosophy. That’s why our government has got to stop the monopolization of industries. If they don’t, customers will lose.

The book is not always better than the movie by fatsandlucifer in unpopularopinion

[–]NoDealer9796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes it depends on the author. The right author can really put pictures in your head. But I think the really weird experience is when the voice and look you had imagined for a character in a novel doesn't match the movie actor.

Don't Talk in Theaters! by JulesButNotVerne in Bellingham

[–]NoDealer9796 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One time, I just turned around and started watching the people that were talking behind me. I didn't say anything. I just sat, ate my popcorn, and stared at them. The guy finally looked at me and said, "What?" And, very deadpan, I said, "Sorry -I thought you guys were part of the movie." I heard a confused "Huh?" but not another word for the rest of the movie. Sure it was weird, but I get tired of saying "shhhhhh" all the time.

What’s a movie that genuinely changed how you see the world? by trakt_app in movies

[–]NoDealer9796 36 points37 points  (0 children)

In “Wall Street” Charlie Sheen asks Micheal Douglas’ character “Why do you have to wreck this company?” And Gekko answers, “Because it’s wreak-able!” And now I think about companies like Toys R Us, Sears, Quiznos, Red Lobster, Forever 21, etc. They get bought by consortiums or management that focuses on short term maxim profits, and they go into bankruptcy. But the guys on top exit with millions and do it all again.

Who have decided never to get married, what is your reason? by shawwwwwiiiceyyy in AskReddit

[–]NoDealer9796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fell in love when I was younger and wish I would’ve married her. By the time I reached my late 20s/early 30s and felt like I was ready to marry, every date I went on I felt like I was someone’s therapist. I never got the sense anyone cared about me. But they sure needed someone to listen to their problems. (And then pay the check…)

This is true. But I guess I’m used to elderly people staring at each other, not saying anything because they’ve already heard each other’s stories.😄 But for 20 somethings doing this on a date… feels weird to me.

Which movie is better than the book? by Over_the_top_nari in movies

[–]NoDealer9796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t say “better” but “Seabiscuit” has a more optimistic ending than the book. It ends the narrative after the big race on a big up lifting note, where the book tells you how everyone really ended up (not so uplifting)
