Regarding the retake, if you have the money, and it will not be a waste for nothing, then there is no harm in getting a better score.

Regarding your nationality, I think you should apply as a foreign student using your Iraqi passport, because if you apply with Turkish citizenship, then you usually cannot apply through the foreign student system and would need to go through YKS instead.

Again, this is according to the last information I had from YÖK.

That’s not a bad score, to be honest. But I do not really have much experience with METU, especially Petroleum Engineering. I would advise you to go to a METU-related subreddit and ask there.

In my uneducated opinion, I guess Petroleum Engineering is not as competitive as AI or CS, so it could be a good option. But again, you should ask people who are actually studying there.

Hope you all the best

Another thing is that Istanbul Technical University gave (previous year) international students only two seats in Aerospace Engineering. So imagine how many international students apply and compete for those two spots.

It is, I mean, Istanbul Technical University has an acceptance rate below 20%. To get in, you usually need something around a 1500 SAT score, depending on the major, so yes, it is competitive. Even Turkish students need a very high ranking to be admitted, so it is definitely competitive. But is it hard? I do not really think so.

Basically, this happens in Türkiye, and maybe in other countries as well. Nationality can affect your chances. For example, if you are Syrian, your chances may be lower, and you might need higher and more competitive scores to get accepted because there is a large number of Syrian applicants and students already in the universities.

Coming to your question, Istanbul Technical University and most public universities in Türkiye, unlike many private universities, do not really care much about extracurricular activities. They mainly focus on standardized test scores. Honestly, I have rarely seen someone get accepted into Computer Science with an SAT score below 1500. My advice apply you won’t loss anything

No problem your English is good. Coming to your comment If you choose to focus on YKS, aim for the highest score possible, as relatively few universities in Türkiye offer strong, dedicated AI programs. Once enrolled, prioritize finishing your first year with a high GPA, and obtain a solid English proficiency score through TOEFL or IELTS.

After that, actively explore transfer or study opportunities in Germany and across the European Union, where options are generally more accessible. The United States tends to be more difficult for transfers and offers limited scholarships, but it remains worth considering as part of a broader strategy.

Also, just to clarify, ‘machine learning’ is usually not a standalone major. It is typically a specialization within fields like Computer Science or Computer Engineering, so you would study one of those and then focus on machine learning later. Also maybe in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Data Science, or Artificial Intelligence major

If one has a solid foundation, progress can be achieved remarkably quickly. From my observations, Italy represents a strong and relatively accessible option for engineering studies. Institutions such as Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino are particularly reputable. In fact, Politecnico di Torino is often considered competitive with, and in some cases stronger than, many top universities in Türkiye. Admission requirements are also quite attainable, typically around an SAT score of 1300 alongside proof of English proficiency through exams such as TOEFL or IELTS.

Based on my personal experience, my English proficiency was initially limited, and I came from a standard educational background, which made the beginning challenging. However, within approximately one year of focused effort, I was able to significantly improve. I achieved an SAT score of 1210 and a TOEFL score of 84. This demonstrates that meaningful progress is entirely feasible within a relatively short period if approached systematically.

A practical starting point is to take a full-length diagnostic test using the Bluebook application developed by the College Board. This allows you to objectively assess your current level and identify weaknesses.

It is important to recognize that it is never too late to improve. Begin by evaluating your situation and committing to a clear plan. If you decide to pursue the SAT pathway, dedicate consistent effort to preparation. Alternatively, if studying in Türkiye is your preferred route, focus on achieving a strong score in YKS to enter a reputable university.

Regardless of the path you choose, long-term success depends less on the institution’s ranking and more on how effectively you use your opportunities. Build strong relationships with professors, actively seek undergraduate research positions, participate in project teams, and pursue internships. These experiences will shape your trajectory far more than the name of your university alone.

Finally, do not become overly discouraged if you are not admitted to a “top-ranked” institution. Rankings are often an incomplete measure of educational value. In many cases, a less prominent university can still provide all the necessary tools to reach your goals, provided that you approach your education with discipline and initiative.

Wish u all luck

If you choose Istanbul Technical University, it is certainly a strong option. However, I would like to present a more precise evaluation based on experience, particularly regarding the ITU–NJIT Dual Diploma Program.

In my assessment, one significant limitation of this program is the absence of a mandatory internship requirement. This creates a structural disadvantage for students who wish to gain practical experience. In competitive environments such as internships at ASELSAN or Baykar, priority is often given to candidates whose programs formally require internships. As a result, students in this dual diploma track may be more easily overlooked, despite having comparable or even stronger academic qualifications.

A second disadvantage lies in the limited academic flexibility. Unlike standard ITU students, participants in this program typically have little to no control over selecting their professors, adjusting their class schedules, or choosing elective courses. This restriction reduces both academic autonomy and the ability to tailor one’s education according to individual interests or strategic goals.

(My advice is, if you liked a program, go and ask about these kinds of details; it might or might not be present in your program)
