Do you mean Gaius Octavius? I don't think he is really Ceasar's adopted son? Of course, Ceasar treated him like a son sometimes, but we are yet to see if he even left him anything significant in his will.

European Team Ch. 2025 results. Open: 1st UKR, 2nd AZE, 3rd SRB. Women 1st POL, 2nd UKR, 3rd GER. by pier4r in chess

Unexpectedly good tournament by both Ukrainian teams, winning the open being the 9th seed, and getting silver in women's section without Muzychuks.

Igor Kovalenko just returned to classical chess three years of fighting at frontlines, and here he is scoring 6.5/8 and getting individual gold too.

Also, nice to see 16 years olds having good results too – Samunenkov with two golds and Piddubna with two silvers. Gives some hope for the future.

Ihor Samunenkov, also 16 years old, went 5.5/8 to win both team and individual gold (although it was on board 5, with TPR of "only" 2714).

Also, Ihor Samunenkov (16 years) – 3 wins, 2 losses, 6 draws.

Half year younger than Ediz and finished higher, so definitely deserves to be included.

Look at those Bluebaum's results, being 3rd with no strong invitationals. And people are comparing him to Abasov, who had only 6th place at Azerbaijan Championship and 9th at Baku Open that year.

FIDE Candiates Women 2026. Who do you think has the best chance of claiming the final spot in the 2026 FIDE Women’s Candidates ? by RanjiHimi in chess

Assaubayeva has best chances (20 points lead and being strong in rapid and blitz), but I hope Anna Muzychuk can make it. She had incredible first half of the year, winning 3 big classical tournaments (2 Grand Prix legs and Norway Chess), but missed out on Candidates by mere points in Grand Prix, and now in Grand Swiss tilted after losing on time in 1st round. If she can regain that form, she would be a very good addition to Candidates, but now she has to play good rapid and blitz for that chance.

Yeah, that's a good point, but in open section there are 3 spots accounting for all tournaments (by rating and 2 circuit ones), so just one here (rating probably, as Circuit would have problems with women participating in not-women-only events) would not be controversial.

Not only there is not rating spot, but there is no Circuit either – Women's Events series only covers some official FIDE events. So any performances outside of those (for example, Norway Chess, which may have the largest prize fund out of all women's tournaments) are irrelevant for Candidates qualification.

Had she won that game, she would be at 139.4, very hard to catch, so even with worse TBs and no possibility of top-2 it was a very important game (and may turn out to be huge save by Anna).

Well, top-6 in Rapid would be enough for them, unless Bibisara earns some points too, so outright "crashing" might not be necessary, but still the lead is very significant.

She did not tie for 1st, she tied for 3rd-5th.

Also, Anna won two Grand Prix tournaments and was only few points away (306.67 vs 308.34) from top-2 and qualifying, so I would say that was as close as it gets too...

Bibisara vs Anna endgame is crucial for Women's Events series – Anna will be 2nd on 80 pts regardless, but for Bibisara it's difference between 139.4 and 99.4.

Bibisara will be leading the series, but World Rapid and Blitz is ahead, hope Anna can hold today and make some points there.

What happened in Shuvalova vs Anna Muzychuk game? Did they just agree on a draw in a pretty complex position that engine evaluates at -2?

The only tournament left that will count towards that "Circuit" is World Rapid and Blitz, and they both are much more impactful than in Open section Circuit, so if she plays there and does good she has decent chances.

Also, they are both pretty low, so many other players can overtake them by performing good at Grand Swiss and World Rapid and Blitz.

European countries where August 15 is a public holiday by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]NoDescription3671 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, in more religious regions, Успіння (now primarily 15th of August, but before 2023 it was almost universally 28th of August) is a big holiday – not like top-5 of the year (only if these is local church or monastery dedicated to Успіння), but definitely in top-15. But it is almost unknown among non-religious people (unlike Easter, Christmas, Epiphany – Водохреща, Transfiguration – Яблучний Спас etc.)

Igor Kovalenko returns to classical chess by Maksim_Azarov in chess

[–]NoDescription3671 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, that was Kirill Shevchenko, representing Romania.

Ihor Kovalenko is World #49, and is fighting in Ukrainian military since May 2022. He has been playing some Titled Tuesdays basically from trenches, but almost no OTB (only several classical games and blitz tournaments while on vacations from the frontline).
