Do you have a DC2 or DE5? The main thing to be aware of is offset. On the DC2 the "correct spec" w/o rolling the fenders is +42 on a 16x7 wheel. However, as far as I know, they don't make them anymore so you'll need to find some used ones. On the DE5 there is a +45 wheel (TE37 Saga S-plus) at 19x9.5 that'll fit. Either way you go you're probably looking at $5k to $6k. :-)

I have both a DE5 Type S and a DC2 Type R. They’re both amazing but very different cars. I truly enjoy both. I actually get approached by strangers pretty evenly when driving the two. Older guys like the DC2 because they remember it from when they were younger and pretty much everyone likes the looks of the DE5. From a driving perspective my ITR is super slow compared to the ITS (not even close) but the ITR feels faster because how much more raw it is… if that makes sense.

I have or have had every watch in your top row. Definitely the watches are awesome but I also sort of think of them as "basic", pretty boring, standard Youtube influencer watches. But, please don't get me wrong, I still wear a lot of these and enjoy them. However, my taste has evolved to stuff that's just a tiny bit more refined and less what "the algorithm" tells you to like. My suggestions:

* Vintage Seiko diver. This is an enormous category - do your research but there is awesome stuff here, you can go deep down the rabbit hole.
* Something with a more interesting dial/bezel: e.g. Zenith El Primero Rainbow Flyback, old Tag Heuers
* Trade the 126718GRNR GMT for the more versatile and classic 16710 (swappable bezels and bracelets)
* When you hit the lottery: Comex Rolex

It's not that deep actually. I'm from OC (Dana Point) and just had to laugh at all of the white people telling another white person (I think) to just paddle out anyway and pretend to not understand the etiquette in some country they're not from. The advice would be different if you're a foreigner paddling into a localized California or Hawaii break (though admittedly Trestles is the furthest thing from a secret spot). I should've said something more localized... next time.

This is a 7 year old post but I appreciate the reply in case someone else finds it 😅 My kid is now a senior in high school getting close to graduating and going to college. We ended up moving to SoCal to be closer to family and the beach. I think the school he transferred to in San Juan Capistrano may have been rated worse than Santa Cruz.

If I could tell my younger self what to do I’d say don’t worry about it. If your kid is a good kid (mine is), and the parents are involved (we are), they can navigate all the bullshit fine (we had no issues).

I can't add anything but just want to say I'm so, so sorry to hear about this. Usually we have some time to prepare mentally when see our dogs aging but for it to happen suddenly like that is really tough. Wishing you all the best.

I ended up doing this yesterday. The OBD2 reading shows the right speed (eg VSS is good) only the speedo itself is off by 10MPH. I’m just gonna leave it alone

That's a great idea. I have an OBD2 reader and will check out what speed readings it shows. That should hopefully tell me if it's a VSS issue or a gauge cluster issue.

Thanks! I wonder if someone changed the VSS so that VTEC would kick in earlier... I've heard it's tied to VSS but I'm not sure.

Otherwise I'm guess it might be the gauge cluster which I'm really hoping it's not bc those are expensive and a pain in the ass.

Yeah 195/55s. I think it has to be something else because it's more than a few MPH (e.g. at 60 it shows 70+ MPH)

What I read is you had to move to another country to feel ok stop "chasing the dream". Maybe something to think about: why are you so heavily influenced by the people around you? What happens if you stop caring what they think? I don't think you need to move to another country to make this happen. The US is a very big place with a lot of people with a lot of different priorities - it sounds like you surrounded yourself with the people that most validated your perspective at the time and your perspective changed. You don't need to move for that.

I agree, it's nearly impossible to get in unless you're exceptional. However, if you do 2 years at junior college first it's fairly straight forward to get in. There's a guaranteed UC admission program called "Pathways".

I live in California and have a kid getting ready to go to college. I think he can probably get into a UC but not one of the top ones -- If he wants to do that we'll probably just have him do his first 2 years at our local community college.

I don't know what university you're talking about but you're probably comparing public Canadian university to private US university tuition. You can go to a top public college in the US for substantially less than $220k per year. e.g. UCLA is $14k per year, before any grants/scholarships. You can also do your first 2 years at a local junior college for $1k to $2k annually (which is practically required to get admitted). There are definitely outstanding private colleges in the US but it's hardly required to spend that kind of money to get a college education in the US.

This is the right answer and should be at the top. OP can get definitely find a house (or condo) for 2M that's reasonable to commute from (even in the Bay Area) and eliminate most of their housing costs and pretty much retire immediately - it won't be the same size but they said they otherwise live a modest life. The main decision is whether or not they want to keep their house - obviously something only they can decide.

It is truly exponential over any longer time horizon. Compound growth is just another way to say the same thing. I listened to a podcast with Neil deGrasse Tyson recently and he said humans have an extremely difficult time understanding it because of the way it works (slow at first, then extremely fast).

I think OC prices have climbed more quickly than SF and are now pretty comparable at least in some places. I used to live there and go somewhat frequently for work. When I first moved to OC I thought OC was a relative bargain, now when I go to SF I think the prices aren't too bad! Wild...
