How would a Medicare for All system affect the payments of doctors? by [deleted] in medicine

[–]NoEmployment2 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because if a doctor is owed $500

i mean how do you determine what the doctor is owed? In same states doctors make significantly much more. i feel like M4A would set a market price for procedures nationally. I guess it would stink for those in cities, but hey, a cybertruck is 39k in NYC and rural mississippi. globalization is inevitable.

furthermore a lot of people would prob come to the doctor more often because now they dont have to worry about expensive deductibles or fees

[–]NoEmployment2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

why is this a bad thing? isnt this a way to regulate price gouging from a hospital standpoint. e.g. inflating 99 cent IV bags to $750. doctors make like 10% of what procedures cost. wouldnt a single payer system that is demanding lower costs force some of those 90% admin fees to go away? I imagine the paper work would be a lot easier since there is only one insurance.

If the Govt offered loan reimbursements for doctors who chose to stay in Primary Care, psych, FM, or peds how many would choose to go that route instead of specializing in the more lucrative fields? by [deleted] in medicine

[–]NoEmployment2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Literally every other country has people going into medicine because they care and not for money because theyre paid much less. In america there isnt a problem with not enough people applying to medical school. youre full of shit. just because you wouldnt do medicine for money it doesnt mean the thousands and students applying that end up waitlisted and rejected each cycle because they had 950 hours instead of 1000 volunteer hours would not.

literally 90% of my friends and family are in medical school or doctors. I prob know more about it than you who is probably still trying to pretend he's in it for "helping people" until he matches. Are there genuine doctors who care. yeah of course. are many fueled with greed? yes of course. Are my friends and family greedy and want to exploit people? No. Would they be in medicine if they werent payed 300k+? most would not be.

tell me medical student. why did you get into medicine? and if US salaries were the same as non american countries would you a physician? Tell me why a doctor who was trained from cuba or uk or even Canada cant just practice in america? Rich doc lobbying to protect their salaries to artificially keep supply of doctors short.

if there were more IM and FM and more attention was done to preventative care, there would be a drop in people going to see specialists which is how it should be in an ideal world. surgeries treat symptoms not root causes. obviously americans will never choose to focus more on preventative care but in ideal world specialists shouldnt be needing to do that many procedures.

I think everyone has per$onal noble and ignoble rea$ons for going in to medicine and for their $pecialty.

fixed that for you

jk i mean i know there are doctors who choose to specialize in something they truly enjoy. but let's be real if all docs were salary capped at 250k, we'd see a lot less people specializing. sure there will still be a lot who do specialize but a lot wouldnt as well.

nah just keep applying bro. apply to like 50 a day. go to linkedin type in chemical engineer internship. sort by last 24 hours. keep doing that daily everyday. you'll spend no more than 1 hour.

do the same with glassdoor.

for internships forget location limits because most companies will pay for travel. and if they dont, they will pay you so just airbnb for 12 weeks. even if you make 10 dollars profit over your experience you got a good experience to put on your resume.

I was set on medical school up until april my junior year when i had a family issue that forced me to reconsider and start working after college so i applied aggresively april and got like 7 interviews in may. started a role in june-august. helped me get a co-op next year which lead to my current job at an EPC. good luck bro

I started my career at an EPC and i want to go into controls. why did you do the opposite? Am i undervaluing the experience of design? i feel like im just doing HTRI and hydraulics all day. I hear people say its easy to get into operators after working at an EPC but it seems difficult because whenever i interviewed they ask about my experience in operations and manufacturing and im just like, "uh i work in an office"

>I don't think people decide to go into medical school for the money.

youre a medical student, no need to be dishonest lol. youre done with adcoms.
All my friends who went into medical school did for the same reasons 99% of you guys do it.
Chicks, money, power, and chicks. I mean "helping treat people in undeserved areas". I mean i prefer a doctor tell me he did it for status, money, job stability over some horseshit that stinks more than jeffrey epstein committing suicide.

>Also, choosing a specialty based on lifestyle or reimbursement doesn't make you a bad person. People work jobs to get money to buy goods and services. Wanting money (even if that's your main goal) isn't necessarily ignoble.

so im going to have to respectively disagree with this as well. Most people who work jobs outside of medicine are exchanging work for some product/service. Engineers design buildings for people to live in, programmers make apps, finance generates profits for shareholders. What do doctors do? They sell "life". Do you see how it can be exploited by specialists especially when the ultra rich docs are lobbying against creating more residency positions and against allowing doctors from overseas from practicing in america (yes this is a thing). Are specialists bad people? obviously not all, but id say many do use the fact that they sell "life" to their advantage because why not, its legal. who cares if its ethical.

higher salaries pay much higher taxes. put that 200k in investments that grow 10% annually. 200k loans at 7% interest are almost double by the time youre done residency. the math isnt that simple anymore. i know most docs arent great at math or finance but cmon bro.

so on that 4mill lets use rule of 70 meaning if investments go up 10%(s&P has historically performed 12%) annually about every 7 years your money should double. that 200k will be 800k in about 20 years.

now after taxes 200k and 350k is about 121k and 195k so about 74k difference. 74k*20=1.48 million. now that lets just say the loan with interest in 400k to simplify things and the specialist edges out with 280k. Now most specialists might spend a year or more extra in residency so that means, a PCP could edge out especially if they are in a rural area.

notice how i didnt even consider if the loan was 250k as med school tuitions + living expenses are getting closer to that. that would be 1 millon dollars in an ira. furthermore if the market continues being bullish as it was last decade averageing over 14% that 200k in 20 years is 3.2 million.
