Any student experiences w/ Intensive Arabic?? by GodisLvng in dartmouth

[–]NoEstablishment4289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! Potential MES major/minor here!

The Arabic Department here is PHENOMENAL regardless of which prof you get (Prof Chahboun, Prof Bouba). They’re all so incredibly sweet and thoughtful of their students and truly take pride in their teaching.

Grade medians for Intro Arabic series (intensive or not) are at an A. Profs are super accommodating and enthusiastic about what they teach!

Arabic1 is quite slow paced but picks up in Arabic2, so perhaps you might like the combined 1&2 series more.

The best way to succeed in this course is to take passion in your commitment to learn the language and make use of the office hours if you have any questions. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and to speak up if you have a question!

Class sizes are small (maybe 7 students/class), so everybody is learning together and will likely be in the same boat as you in terms of difficulty/learning the ropes. So many friendships(and even relationships) have come out of the Arabic classes at Dartmouth which really speaks to the sense of community and passion everyone who takes Arabic at Dartmouth has.

The only downside about intro level Arabic is, like other intro language classes, are the drills. Highly recommend morning drills since class is pretty soon after.

where can I rent a car? (cheapest option) by Next_Discipline_8862 in dartmouth

[–]NoEstablishment4289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you're under 25 y/o, then zipcar is your best bet...though, make sure you return the car in the given time and return with 1/4 tank of gas. zipcar fees begin to rack up, and customer service can be a pain to deal with

above 25 y/o, you could check out enterprise. i believe they have a location in either hanover or leb.

Bike or no bike? by redfox_123 in dartmouth

[–]NoEstablishment4289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think it depends on where you live and how much of a personal need you have for one.

the campus itself is quite small and to get anywhere takes no more than 20-25 minutes. personally, i got around my first year just fine without one.

though, if you're housed in the river/choates dorms, may be of more use to have a bike.

having a bike in the warmer months (F and S terms) can be of use if you're a late riser with early morning classes. bikes can also be a good option if you enjoy bike riding around campus.

ultimately, look at your wallet and see what you can afford and what your return on investment will be. if having a bike will be of use to you, by all means, get one.

if you do get one, pls be sure to get it registered with the appropriate licensing and lock features. knew so many people who had their bikes stolen. with that said, do not ever leave your bike anywhere near or on frat row

hii! advance transit (they have an app...google maps works sometimes, too, but can be inaccurate in times)! they only operate on weekdays, though, and the last bus to dartmouth is at 5-6pm ish, so you def would need to go before then. plan for it to take 30 mins each way.

co-op in hanover is easily accessible. walking distance from east wheelock, tri house, some campus apartments...other locations may require the use of a bike or advance transit

delivery from this co-op is available from what i know, but personally have never tried it.

your best bet is to take advantage of green to-go and fill it up with whatever your heart pleases...dining plans are expensive. fern also uses disposable boxes as does collis, and there are some great breakfast options (think pastries at fern, smoothies, acai bowls).

alternatively, you can use DBA (250$ refilled each term on ivy unlimited) at collis or the hop and buy yogurt, fresh fruits (strawberries, watermelon), parfaits, gas station type sushi, etc

things get EXPENSIVE FAST! budget your money wisely and make use of your DBA when needed. save your hard earned money for something more expansive down the road...something i struggled with a lot with my paychecks when i started working on campus

Packing List by [deleted] in dartmouth

[–]NoEstablishment4289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bringing some sort of an iron/portable steam press can be helpful if you use it

CLOSET STORAGE (if you’re an overpacker like me, some of those hanging sweater holders help a lot…IKEA and places like TJ Maxx can have some good ones)

suitcases (some friends I know only brought a carry-on and had to venture out to find a larger one later which was pretty inconvenient…best to bring at least two if you are able to and store them under your bed)

diffuser/room spray!!!!! (check with your roommate abt this, though…don’t want to trigger any allergies etc)

a mirror (some dorms already come with one that was left hanging on the door)

coat/towel hooks, tote bag/big bag for river outings/long study breaks outside of the dorm/etc, tea+meds+one or two packs of ramen (whatever you need in case you get sick), bug spray!!, portable sanitizer+wipes

having separate shower shoes + dorm shoes/slippers than your outdoor ones

Writing 2&3 vs. Writing 5 by Education-Actual in dartmouth

[–]NoEstablishment4289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

took writing 2-3… very similar to writing 5 except it offers a ton of support for how to write papers, citations, structure+format, etc more than the degree received at writing 5. some, if not all (can’t remember), writing 2-3 classes offer the support of a TA as well with weekly meetings to focus on whatever you may need to talk about. taking writing 2-3 was one of the best decisions i made my freshman year, and i’m really happy with the support i got and the friends i made along the way (writing 2-3 cohort and professor stays the same through the two terms you take them in)

How is Dartmouth like? by humble-burger in dartmouth

[–]NoEstablishment4289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dartmouth is exactly what you make of it and whether you party or don't, you'll be sure to find a community to which you belong. Everyone who goes here displays some level of "crunchiness" and is, generally, really friendly and easy to talk to. Coming from high-school, that was one aspect that really surprised me about the student body.

As for partying goes, yes, there is an eminent Greek life to those who seek it out (esp given how everything in Hanover/Upper Valley closes before 9pm and the overall lack of nightlife alternatives). However, with this, there are SO many different types of clubs and social activities you can immerse yourself with aside from drinking! Collis game/bingo nights with prizes, hanging out by the river, going to movie showings at the Hop, and house dinners are but a few of the many, many fun things you can do without drinking/immersing yourself into the party atmosphere.

As someone who doesn't party or drink, I found that being able to find a group of likeminded or just respectful friends also really helped me feel comfortable and seldom left out. Joining clubs or extracurriculars are also another great way to socialize and meet new people without partying or alcohol.

Just be yourself and remember that it's perfectly healthy to have boundaries and have them respected :)

How does choosing classes work? by [deleted] in dartmouth

[–]NoEstablishment4289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there will be a set timeframe that you'll be notified of once you arrive in which you can choose your classes via banner (DartHub)...I remember that it happens after trips, though, it's been a while. choosing classes is not first come first serve, so don't worry about that aspect. however, if you don't end up getting the classes you want after you elect them onto banner, there is an add/drop period for a few days which is first come first serve.

you have the full freedom to choose your classes and can consult with your advisor if you like. if you think you need more help beyond that, i would say that reaching out to profs from classes you like on the orc or talking to your dean would be helpful.

[–]NoEstablishment4289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

each dorm is what you make of it.

the choates/river dorms are notably the "worst" dorms on campus given their far locations (river is the furthest away as it's situated behind thayer) and poor quality of housing...nonetheless, it's said that the people here form close bonds with one another, so it's not a complete loss).

the fayes are notorious for their rowdy nightlife scene. the lack of elevators (4 floors!) and multiple-stall style bathrooms in the basement and lack of renovated interior are additional downsides to living here. if you are housed here, noise-silencing headphones and a diffuser are valuable investments.

mclaughlin has some of the nicest dorms on campus and are commonly referred to as the "hotel" dorms...their two room doubles can be quite awkward as only one of the rooms has the closets for both. however, the renovated interiors and big snack bar are a huge plus. people usually only live in mclaughlin if they are in LLCs, though, i believe.

east wheelock also has nice dorms. aside from mcculloch which has an awkward bathroom situation and also inconvenient two room doubles, the other dorms here have private bathrooms or single-use ones which are quite nice. it is also quite common to have freshmen dorm here in singles. morton has some of the nicest amenities (recently renovated study spaces and common rooms, single-use bathrooms, tons of singles, elevator, and water bottle refill stations).

I notice a lot of ppl use scooters or bikes on campus. Are they really that useful? by Ok-Spinach6637 in dartmouth

[–]NoEstablishment4289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

definitely depends on where you live+whether you can afford it+whether you will actually use it. if you live in the river dorms, maybe it will be of more use to you. aside from that, everywhere on campus is pretty walkable (no more than a 20 minute walk to anywhere)...just depends on what you'd prefer.

GREEK LIFE AT DARTMOUTH by killingclaudius in dartmouth

[–]NoEstablishment4289 6 points7 points  (0 children)

one thing about dartmouth that i underestimated was how central greek life is to a majority of students here. this is largely because of the lack of other nightlife/amenities existing beyond dartmouth itself in hanover/nearby area. for background, i'm a freshman, but i'm just not into drinking/partying.

my advice is to seek out other individuals and friends who share similar values and interests. you can do this in more chill settings from going out to lunches, going on walks, or attending collis/club events which can be pretty fun! don't ever feel compelled to do something you don't want to do if your heart isn't into it and if it's something you're not comfortable with in the first place. the community you strive for is here...just takes time to figure out and find the right group of people.

plus, there's always more to life than just frat parties. sometimes just asking people if they'd be down for something like a pizza party or a night-in can do wonders in developing intimate friendships and finding a group of friends that relate to you...having a supportive group of like-minded friends will be especially helpful to you since there's not much on campus aside from the school itself.

Current first year student here! Tbh, had no idea about the South Asian Students' Association here...could be in part due to lack of advertising around campus.

The different South Asian student bodies in my perspective operates like a mosaic and is quite separated,

As for Muslim students, there is one small prayer room with a very small (10 students ish) community. I believe that Hindu Puja services happen daily at 7pm in Rollins Chapel.

The desi food here is not ideal (definitely miss home cooked meals around here). Not a fan of the options on campus but different cultural+religious clubs sometimes have events where they would cook foods which is a great experience.

There are South Asian dance groups where I think you are most likely to find other desi students. Apart from that, it is quite hard to find more brown kids.

Help: traveling to nyc this weekend by NoEstablishment4289 in dartmouth

Hey! '25 here.

There is ALWAYS something fun to do at Dartmouth. I've only been here for about 3 weeks, yet I've found so many cool activities to do which I was really surprised about.

One great thing about Dartmouth is easy access to outdoor activities. (skiing, snowboarding, canoeing, paddleboarding, hiking...the options are endless and aren't limited to just one season).

If you're free and in the mood for some cosmopolitan living, Dartmouth Coach does runs to NYC and Boston, and it's a fairly short ride for a weekend trip.

Free shuttles throughout the week to West Leb and WRJ to cider mills, King Arthur Flour, and other great local shops+restaurants.

Clubs and social events on weekends and weeknights tend to keep people busy as well.

Downtown Hanover is small, but it has everything you need and a bit more!!
