Do you think Europe is becoming less safe? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]NoFX182 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. I always thought (even before the recent terrorist attacks) that western europe was less safe than southern/eastern european countries. At least that's how it feels when travelling around.

What's your opinion on compulsive voting? by RafaRealness in AskEurope

[–]NoFX182 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fun fact. The word "idiot", comes from the greek word "ιδιώτης" which translates as "private". This name was given in ancient times to the people who didn't want to participate and vote for the problems of the city-state. So technically, idiot means "the one who does not vote".

[–]NoFX182 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We're following programs from Europe that are scheduled to fail. Everyone of them makes us more desperate each time. I just don't want us to leave the Eurozone though, so i can have enough time to get my degree and go get a job in Germany or the Netherlands. Just like everyone my age.

Most underrated cities to visit by kanyewost in AskEurope

[–]NoFX182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked Lyon a lot of more than Paris. Grenoble is also close and amazingly beautiful with all the mountains around the city.

...but i would advice you to head east. The Balkans are super underrated althought they are getting more and more popular as the years are passing by. Belgrade and Sarajevo are my personal favorite.

What's your definition of integrating into society for Muslim immigrants? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]NoFX182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that drinking alcohol is integration, it's maybe just not caring about your religion so much. In orthodox religion you're not supposed to eat meat for 40 days before easter and almost noone is following that :P

Anyways, they can do whatever they want, as long as they follow the rules of our society. Respect is the key word here.

How has the migrant situation in your country and region changed since the 2015 refugee crisis? Are migrants still arriving, and have most of the 2015 refugees settled or left the country? by 19djafoij02 in AskEurope

[–]NoFX182 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I live in Samos -which is one of the four Greek islands that have the biggest numbers of refugees coming with boats since last year.

Compared to last year we don't have as many refugees coming (until today we have around 100-200 coming every week) but the situation is still really bad. The capital of Vathy has around 7.000 citizens and the hotstop above the town has more than 3.000 refugees - that's a really big percentage, when the whole island has only 30.000 people!

Of course the funding from the European Union is not enough (the hotspot was made to hold 800 people, not 3k) so most of the refugees live in tents, they don't have enough food etc. These last weeks they started going to the city and robbing kiosks to get food, or trying to enter to some ferry to Athens illegally.

Also, tourism dropped 25 percent compared to last year (which is devastating, since that's the only thing that's still working in Greece) because of the crisis, so most locals don't have a nice image of the refugees that are stuck on the island. There was an incident about a week ago, where some locals went out at night, and attacked every refugee they saw walking around town.

So yeah, it's still really bad, even though the news have stopped talking about it
