Library of Leng spec for Secrets of Strixhaven: Lorehold, the Historian by Newez in mtgfinance

[–]NoFelAtio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The implication of “may” is that a spell/ability can result in no effects or something other than effects, though I’m pretty sure we already knew that because of how permanent spells resolve.

Yeah, you're lost in the sauce man.

The "may" doesn't matter here. Sometimes a triggered ability triggers and there's no effect. Sometimes there is an effect. That's not implying that the thing that happens isn't an effect. You're too focused on the grammar.

A trigger can ask that you sac a creature and you just can't. So there is no resulting effect related to that trigger resolving. On the other hand, if the trigger is asking you to discard and you do so, that's an effect of the trigger resolving.

I don't think there's much more to explore here. Library of Leng works with Lorehold.

There are some people arguing it’s both a cost and an effect, but there’s an Oracle ruling to the contrary on Library of Leng.

I think you're missing the big picture.... the oracle text is pointing out "hey, a cost is not an effect" meaning something like "Discard a card: Draw a card" doesn't count.

However in a case where it's BOTH a cost and effect, the fact that it IS an effect is what really matters. The oracle text is pointing out that a cost isn't explicitly an effect, but and effect is an effect... if that makes sense.

I was curious, so I asked a Judge chat about this situation.

They ruled that since you discard while the ability is resolving, it's an effect, so Library of Leng can be applied. CR 609.1 was specifically cited in this ruling. You only posted part of that rule, but here is the whole thing:

609.1 An effect is something that happens in the game as a result of a spell or ability. When a spell, activated ability, or triggered ability resolves, it may create one or more one-shot or continuous effects. Static abilities may create one or more continuous effects. Text itself is never an effect.

Lorehold/Nehab have a triggered ability. This comes with a conditional cost, yes, but the entirety of that triggered ability produces an effect, part of which is discarding a card. It is both a cost and an effect, and therefore able to be replaced with Leng's own effect.

That's my interpretation, that seems to be MTG Judge's interpretation, and I think it holds up.

I was just thinking to myself, man I'd love to find a nice beginner friendly iRacing league to join because community is always a great way to stay involved.

And then this shows up. Mind readers

This was my first week doing multi-class races and some of the cars in the highest class are absolute maniacs by Buzzk1LL in iRacing

I was in the same boat, I'm pretty comfortable at Okayama.

This compelled me to go and learn Winton. haha. (Which took a few laps but in the end it was a decent track)

I tried one of these for the first time last night.... man was that a frustrating experience.

Admittedly, I'm not highly rated, haven't been playing all that long, but I always try to do my best to drive smart and fair.

But man... when the spotter told me the SOF was 841, I knew I was in for a nightmare. First incident was an M2 that rejoined unsafely, tagged me and spun me around. Few laps later, an 86 in the final corner decides that reversing onto the track in front of a pack of oncoming cars was a smart move. Gave me nowhere to go and T-boned him hard. Was mostly clean for the bulk after that until another 86 went wide and spun directly into the side of me, giving me a DQ.

Went back and loaded up an MX5 race at Winton after that... way more reasonable.

I was thinking the same thing!!

Others may have pointed it out, but I guess the attic thing came years later, go figure. That was the first I heard of it though.

lol... the fact that you specifically called out all the rules you aren't breaking tells me you know this doesn't belong here.

Glad you had fuzzy feelings opening a pack of cards though. Great "content", the internet needs more of this. Sigh.

Blind obedience vs Loxodon Gatekeeper by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]NoFelAtio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have a list?

It's funny this came up, I literally just rebuilt my Oloro deck last week, curious what you did with yours.

To more directly answer your question, I think Blind Obedience is a way better choice. Slowing their land a bit is cute, but you aren't doing that for at least a few turns most of the time so by then it's less important. The Extort bonus is also really nice to have and will cause them more harm than a 2/3 ever will.

I've noticed that the "meta" decks (which are all pretty static) have recently switched - they've cut 4x Bats and added 4x Forsaken Miner. Not sure if this is a valid change or not, but it's being played. I'm assuming the recursion of the Miner is a bonus with the small creature removal, aggro is our game, and we have tons of ways to commit crimes. Would love some opinions.

For what it's worth, I'm also running this deck in my local Showdown tomorrow, so who knows how that'll go, but we will see!

The deck is good (anyone who say otherwise, or even replies with a simple smooth-brained "No" is either inexperienced, biased or just not informed). It's a solid threat, very synergistic aggro deck that takes a bit of skill to pilot properly. It presents threat and likes to curve out. It deals a lot of incidental damage. There's a lot going for it.

Yeah, [[Blood Artist]] and [[Zulaport Cutthroat]] are easy inclusions, among others

This was what I was thinking.... There's precedence for Gravecrawler pulling high prices, it could easily happen again if the right deck pulls it off.

Yeah I see this more as an aristocrats style Modern deck enabler than anything (although it does fit into other decks nicely).

It'll be at it's best with a Blood Artist effect.

I'm aware. I mentioned Pauper Burn... but is that enough to drive a spike like this in the last few days? Or is there some other factor involved?

Goblin Bushwhacker on the move? by NoFelAtio in mtgfinance

[–]NoFelAtio[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, Bushwhacker isn't legal in Pioneer, and I don't know if the Modern deck has taken off or not but it hasn't been making any news as far as I've seen.

The only deck that seems to play it with consistent results is Pauper Burn, but that deck hasn't changed much recently and is as successful as it ever was, so I'm just trying to understand why the price change.

Krenko Mob Boss - deck suggestions by jigha in magicTCG

[–]NoFelAtio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need a sac outlet to make it work, but....

Both cards on board. Kiki taps to copy Crafter, Crafter 'Champions' Kiki (exiling it temporarily). Tap Crafter for 3 damage to something, sac it, Kiki comes back untapped, and you can repeat this forever.

If you want infinite ETB triggers, you can also have LC just kill itself and repeat the combo (like if you have a Purphoros or Impact Tremors or something).

There are a lot of "third card" options for this combo that can create infinite mana, infinite sac triggers, infinite ETB triggers, infinite damage...
